Angry MS Bill Introduced to BAN Restaurants Serving Obese People

This is the probably the most offensive piece of proposed legistlation I can remember seeing in my entire life...I'm speechless.
Utterly speechelss.

From The Smoking Gun... (includes copy of the bill)

Quote:
FEBRUARY 1--Mississippi legislators this week introduced a bill that would make it illegal for state-licensed restaurants to serve obese patrons. Bill No. 282, a copy of which you'll find below, is the brainchild of three members of the state's House of Representatives, Republicans W. T. Mayhall, Jr. and John Read, and Democrat Bobby Shows. The bill, which is likely dead on arrival, proposes that the state's Department of Health establish weight criteria after consultation with Mississippi's Council on Obesity. It does not detail what penalties an eatery would face if its grub was served to someone with an excessive body mass index.
Thank God it's described as likely "Dead on Arrival." Any of our MS members, I hope you will share your thoughts and feelings with your legislators.

Ow.

Do they propose that eateries have a set of scales in front, that you can't eat there if you exceed a particular limit? Think of it, signs on restaurants like on bridges, Load Limit XXX pounds. What absolute utter nonsense. My dh, when I told him this, asked, "Do they propose letting obese people starve?" Total claptrap idiocy.

Supposed to be based on BMI. So I guess they'd need both scales and a tape measure? As if people who have weight issues don't suffer enough discrimination and humiliation as it is.

"Junkfood Science" blogger called the bill's sponsor, who claims it's for real.

Junkfood Science: No fat people allowed: Only the slim will be allowed to dine in public!

Quote:
He said that while, regrettably, he doesn’t believe his bill will pass, this is serious. He wrote it, he said, because of the “urgency of the obesity crisis and need for government action.” He hopes it will “call attention to the serious problem of obesity and what it is costing the Medicare system.”

Oh gosh......I lived in Mississippi for 10 years when I was a kid/teen and met many, many lovely people who influenced my life. It seems as though in every state there are idiots who can make news and obviously Mississippi is no exception. There are certainly better ways to "call attention to the serious problem of obesity."

This is, far and away, the most ridiculous thing I have heard about in a very long time!. It amazes me that here, in our supposedly oh so "tolerant" society, it is still very much acceptable to discriminate against overweight people! Sheesh...this is completely offensive!

oh, i was so disgusted i could just spit when i read this. now, later, when i cooled off a little, it occurred to me that the bill's sponsors are probably not stupid enough to think it would pass, so it's most likely a publicity stunt kind of thing. but to even suggest it is totally offensive.

i hope it does get them publicity: the negative kind!

You know this is definitely going to be DOA... can you imagine the lawsuits???
Honestly, if they passed this, what's to stop them from infringing upon people's rights even further? Besides, what if the foods I chose at that restaurant were completely in line with my "diet?"

Are they also going to stop selling alcohol to anyone who *might* be an alcoholic?
LOL, from what I know about politics, THAT should get some lawmakers' attention!
This is just a stupid publicity stunt because Mississippi was recently named the "Fattest state in the nation."

I completely agree with you Goddess. It is so discriminatory and ridiculous that they could only be looking for publicity.
