Just read this story dissing eggs, saying that eating 7 or more a week could be the cause of risk of earlier death in men, especially diabetics.

Seven or more eggs a week raises risk of death - Yahoo! News

I actually chuckled when I read this, because just last week Johnny Bowden had a wonderful blog on the wonders of the egg.

Jonny Bowden Solutions

Quoting the end of the Yahoo article:

"'Egg consumption was not associated with (heart attack) or stroke,' the researchers wrote. But the men who ate seven eggs a week or more were 23 percent more likely to have died during the 20-year period. Diabetic men who ate any eggs at all were twice as likely to die in the 20 years. Men who ate the most eggs also were older, fatter, ate more vegetables but less breakfast cereal, and were more likely to drink alcohol, smoke and less likely to exercise -- all factors that can affect the risk of heart attack and death."

So, these men already had major health problems, and iffy lifestyle habits, but this article implies that eating eggs probably contributed to their early deaths. Most of them probably wore white underwear, too. I wonder if that was a contributing factor, too?

Ok...let me get this right.....23 percent more likely to die than whom? Healthy 5 year olds? Hindu Monks? Peruvian pack llamas? It doesn't tell what these stats are being compared against so therefore they are meaningless. DD1 is a health statistician and as she says, "there are lies, there are damn lies, then there are statistics". Are these guys bulking up on toast and homefries with their bacon and eggs? Is their diabetes under control? How many of them actually died of heart disease and how many were hit by buses or shot by jealous lovers? The article just says "more likely to die". The second leading cause of death in the developed world is receiving medical care from a doctor. Nearly all those who die, have recently seen or been in the care of a doctor. Leading cause of death? Drum roll please.... LIVING! 100% of those who are dead have been alive at some point and 100% of those alive today will at some point in the future die. By the way, I was saddened recently to read that 78% of clams are less happy today then they were 20 years ago.

I just LOVE how the media jumps on meaningless statistics. I guess it's how you manufacture news on a slow day.

I agree with your thoughts. Why don't they get healthy men/women for this studies? Yeesh! Then they can tell if what they are having them consume in large amounts has any effect. You think they would be smarter then me, a sahm with a high school diploma.

I watched Gary Taubes (author of Good Calories, Bad Calories Challenging the Conventional Wisdom on Diet, Weight Control and Disease) give a lecture at Berkely (it's online if anyone wants to see it). At the end of the lecture he points out that the whole debate about what's healthy and what diet will control weight would be a VERY simple and inexpensive study: Divide a group of healthy men into two groups and keep them in a controlled environment. Feed both groups 3000 calories a day. One group gets low fat, high carb and the other group gets high fat, low carb. At the end of 4 or 6 weeks, weigh everyone. Compare blood tests to before and after. Easy peasy. But unfortunately there isn't a lot of money to be made off what we know and previous research has shown to be the expected outcome.

Also you'll probably find this other video on youtube if you do a search for Malcolm Kendricks. The video is of a presentation he made to the British Medical Association at Leeds last November. He explores what previous research has shown about causes of heart disease. He also presents a very interesting and provocative hypothesis about the true causes of heart disease.

Rob isn't the only cynic in town.
