Default High Fructose Corn Syrup - YUCK!

I have always thought that the obesity rise and the use of HFCS were tied together. I started doing some research and wow! that stuff is nasty! Has anyone else read up on the subject? I checked through my pantry last night and I can't believe the items that contain this poison. I have, as part of my plan, been trying to eat as little of processed foods as possible. I am sure glad I am! From everything I read, HFCS is genetically engineered...I don't want that stuff in my body for sure. I am now an avid label reader! I have my DH checking labels too. I was so happy that my beloved pork rinds have no HFCS They are my answer to chips! I would love to hear from anyone that has researched this subject and what they found.

At one time I had a major allergy to corn and corn products, including corn syrup. I broke out in hives really bad after eating just a little bit of anything with corn in it. So, I had to start reading labels, and was absolutely amazed at how much food had the ubiquitous HFCS in it. So, going low carb was probably the best thing for me.

It really irked me when I bought a jar of sugar free Coffee Mate. Sugar free should mean absolutely no sugar, right? No, I guess not, because it has HFCS in it. Their reasoning on the label is that it's such an insignificant amount that it won't count. Well, I have news for them, sugar is sugar, and if there is HFCS in the product, no matter how small an amount, then it cannot be sugar free!

Warning ~ Bob's Red Mill Low Carb Bread mix contains crystalline fructose, more commonly known as HFCS! How can it be low carb?!

Gloria, low carb does not necessarily mean sugar free. My assumption is that the amount that is in there is not enough to cause a major increase in the carb count. However, that begs the question of what it is doing in there in the first place if there is not enough to greatly increase the carb count. My assumption is that it is suppossed to improve the taste of the product, regardless of the consequences. FYI, HFCS has 14.44 grams of carb per tablespoon compared to 12.6 grams for sugar.
