It's amazing how many bubble brained people there are in this world. It's easy to say eat less and you'll lose weight if you've never had a weight problem. Rob

I can't read the article without subscribing or filling out the form, I'll do it later. But as for the comment in the above post. I know of so many people with that attitude. They're 'well just stop eating so much' makes it all seem so elementary, and those of us with weight problems just look like pigs. The truth is, before even at over 300 pounds, I did not eat all that much. Certainly not more than anyone I knew that was skinny... partly is what WHAT I ate, and probably partly a predisposition to not being able to handle carbs. But it isn't as simple as 'don't eat as much and you'll loose weight'. Of course, I'm preaching to the choir here, because we all know what bull@*(! that is anyway. 315/299/150 (Started 8/17/03)

I totally agree with the person who said kids should be educated in school about nutrition and healthy meal choices. Our school serves some pretty nasty meals, loaded with sugar and breading and sodium, and the person putting those meals is supposed to be a dietician( I'm sure I spelled that wrong )example : 9/4 Breaded chicken patty on a bun, oven fries, buttered noodles and corn niblets, fruit choices. Thats supposed to be a balanced meal? Then the supermodel who gets paid mega bucks to take a bite of a sandwich that has more calories in it than she would normaly eat in a week, I wonder if they just spit it out after the shot?? That was quite an interesting article, thanks Andrea Jackie

I don't have a print reference, but I heard a blurb on the radio this morning indicating that the diabetes crisis may not be as bad as has been reported. I'm not necessarily discounting either story, but it drives me nuts that anything which can be classified as "self-reported" can make it into a scientific journal and get reported as "groundbreaking new research" when what it really is is hearsay. Diet studies, of course, are nigh impossible to do double-blind/controlled, but still...*sigh*

In reference to what Jackie said, and please don't think I'm defending the school lunch program or dieticians, lol, I'm not, but often in discussing the 'fat' issue with my husband either our own, or the 'national obesity crisis' if you will, I've said it's cheaper to be fat than to be healthy. The people that publish those stupid reports should take a closer look into why people eat as badly as they do. With poverty levels rising everywhere, with people living check to check and scrimping on everything including the food bill picking up bread and pasta is cheaper than an extra package of chicken or beef. Of course in addition to the falacy that fat is bad and meat is bad and eggs are bad, etc...which they are now realizing isn't the truth of the matter at all. Those dieticians in the school system, and other places may indeed know the truth about the lousy food choices being made, but they also know they have a budget and have to create filling meals for a buck fifty, or whatever... sooooooo load on the pasta, bread, and tatertots. 315/299/150 (Started 8/17/03)

Understood horsemom,I guess I just wasn't clear enough , the day I posted had tons of starch, but we also have days where they serve salad, and green beans on the same day, example:lasagna, w/ green beans and tossed salad , mixed fruit. I would think they could BALANCE things out better. One good thing they did was take the nachos and cheese dip away as an entree (yes, an entree, last year). I do believe I am going to the board meeting and ask some questions. Have a good one!! Jackie

So they want to increase tax on junk food..hahaha!!! What are they going to do put a scale at the register and only increase the tax on junk food if you are obese and not if you are "normal". In my state we don't have a food tax so I guess the government is SOL here!! Doesn't the government know that not all obese people got fat from junk food, I personally would choose a fresh loaf of bread over a candy bar any day! If the government is so concerned over obesity then why doesn't it force the Health Insurance providers to cover the costs of prevention. Health Insurance for the most part will not cover any kind of help for the obese, their general response in the doctor's office is eat less, if it were that easy nobody would have a weight problem and everyone would be happy. Why don't they try covering the costs of mental health to find out why we got this way in the first place and then help us to work through those issues so we don't continue to use food the way others use drugs and alcohol. Obese people are an easy target because we can't hide our fat the way others hide their addictions. Mary ~ "It's never to late to be what you might have been"
