| Got an email response from Jill Parker stating she had retracted her article and attached the retraction. Can't open it though because it is in word perfect format. Perhaps someone can help with this so that we can see what she actually said in her retraction. Sorry folks just found out she didn't send a retraction (she doesn't know what that means apparently) but shifted the blame to so-called reliable, respected sources such as a Dr. Kenney and the American Dietetic Association, National Institute of Health, etc. I responded by telling her that this was not a retraction and that she should complete her research by giving as much time to low-carb professionals as she did to the others. Sorry, lost my head there for a moment getting excited by what I though was a retraction. kateryna apr-15-03 226/203/126 You can only be young once, but you can be immature forever! | Beejay: Here is what she actually sent me once I asked her to send the retracton in another format. In response to your email, I apologize for inadvertently omitted the source from my newspaper article that was printed in the East Texas Review on Low-Carbohydrate Diets on September 10, 2003. The handout that the information was taken from came from the Food and Health Newsletter that is published on www.foodandhealth.com and the author is Dr. James A. Kenney, Ph.D., R.D., a nutrition research specialist. You can obtain a copy of this publication at http://www.foodandhealth.com/DM2.pdf. Texas Cooperative Extension strives to provide research-based information for consumers, educators and other professionals in the areas of food, nutrition and health, and food safety. Any health educator will tell you that the only way to maintain a healthy weight, and in turn a healthy lifestyle, is to follow the suggestions of the Food Guide Pyramid and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans along with a daily exercise regime. As always, you should follow the advice of your physician on your weight-loss plans. The information provided in the newspaper article was printed to provide additional facts that some consumers may not know about the low-carb, high protein diet that they are following. I have included several resources that you can read if you are interested in obtaining additional information on low-carb diets. The sources include the American Dietetic Association and the National Institutes of Health. If you have any further questions about low-carb diets I s! uggest that you speak to your doctor about the long-term effects that this type of diet can have on your overall health. Bottom line, if it works for you and you have all of the information and your doctor agrees that this is the right diet for you, good luck with all of your future endeavors. If I can be of any help to you on any other matter, feel free to contact me at the Gregg County Extension Office. Thank you for your response! American Dietetic Association http://www.eatright.org/Public/Media...edia_16442.cfm National Institutes of Health http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/nutr...yths/index.htm Anyway that's her version of a retraction (as I said earlier the women doesn't even know what that means as evidenced by excerpt as shown above) kateryna apr-15-03 226/203/126 You can only be young once, but you can be immature forever! |

| And, as I said in the thread that I started on the same topic....... I should send her my blood work, blood pressure and weight results as proof, but I doubt that it would make any difference at all. Judy -- who is embarrassed to be from the same city as someone so ill informed. Please don't color your opinion of all East Texans by this one person. | First off, thanks, kateryna, for printing that "rebuttal". I got her email, too, and couldn't open it, either. Second, did anyone click on the link for her "source"? I went to foodandhealth.com and opened an Acrobat document; it was an article by James J. Kenney of the Pritikin Longevity Center. This woman reprinted his article VERBATIM and stuck her byline on it. I'm no writer, but I'm pretty sure you can't do that. I wonder if the people at East Texas Review know about that? Third, the Pritikin Approach is a very low fat diet program; their bias is obvious. I think that maybe they are feeling a little threatened? Oh, and by the way, Dr. Kenney doesn't provide any documentation for his statements, either. Cooking is at once child's play and adult joy. And cooking done with care is an act of love. - Craig Claiborne |

| Check it out........maybe the editors got the message. The entire ETR site is down today. You can't get to Jill's article or anything else. Please note --- the ETR is just a small weekly paper with very limited readership. The article was more prominently featured in the Longview News-Journal's food section. Jill writes weekly columns in that paper. You can make more impact by contacting that paper. The Web page is http://www.news-journal.com. A letter to the editor may be just what is needed to reach more people than she did with her article. That contacts is Editor: Pete Litterski, plitterski@coxnews.com (903) 237-7740 . If you want more names and email, the page to fine them is http://www.news-journal.com/search/content/staff.html Judy 180/144/138 "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." | They probably got so bombarded after that article that their server couldn't handle the traffic! GOOD. Maybe they'll make sure their reporters have their facts straight from now on, BEFORE they publish such trash. Char Don't squat with yer spurs on! |

| LOL - you guys are great. You all rounded up the posse! I wish I could be so eloquent and respond to such rubbish. Poor old Jill didn't know what she was in for when she published "her" article. Geesh! My mom always told me you can't believe everything you read! Glo Start LC on 10/29/02 188/170.5/155 Live well, laugh often, love much! |

| And here's my rebuttal to the retractive letter (I always thought it was retraction!) Jill: I was just now able to open you "retractive" letter as it is in Word Perfect format. I am appalled. This is NOT a retraction. This letter further demonstrates that you are in no way informed about your topic, nor are you qualified to make any sort of dietary recommendation. First of all, to cite www.foodandhealth.com as a valid resource for research information is ridiculous. Food and Health Communications is a commercial, for profit enterprise. They don't care if the information they distribute is valid, or soundly researched, they just want to sell their products. Second, citing Dr. Kenney as an authority on the negative aspects of a low carb way of eating is ludicrous. I can only assume you did not notice that Dr. Kenney is associated with the Pritikin Longevity Center which advocates a low fat, high fiber diet. The Pritikin Diet, and all of its components, generates millions of dollar annually in diet-related sales and programs. The low carb approach threatens that dollar business. I highly doubt Dr. Kenney is unaware of the impact on his financial wellbeing should Americans turn away from the Pritikin approach. Third, the USDA Food Pyramid is a joke, as are the Dietary Guidelines. The development of the Pyramid and the Guidelines was heavily influenced by agribusiness lobbying and they in no way embody any concern for public health (check your history before you question my statement - it took years for the beef, cheese and pork industries to recover from publishing of the Pyramid). It is evident to me that you have done no additional research into this way of eating. Seriously, you can't believe everything you read! You must question the source's motive. Additionally, as stated in my original email to you, I question your impartiality. You should thoroughly research both the pros and the cons of any topic before you publish anything. You and your organization are doing a gross disservice to the public by perpetuating such bias. Jennifer Estey Boston, MA I just throught about this - I am probably beating up on some young college kid who's trying to earn a buck. Oh, well, teach her a lesson to be more careful about what she writes. Jen 175/131/120 |

| You go girl!! BTW the way -- I've seen her picture in the paper. She's no college kid, and she really could stand to join in our way of eating. In Texas, Agricutural Extension Agents generally have a BS degree minimum. It use to be be required that the degree be in Home Economics. I'm not sure what the degree requirement are now. | Jen... this is a cogent, coherent, persuasive and beautifully written letter. Thank you on behalf of all of us who were appalled at this whole issue. I hope Jill Parker has been shaken in her shoes - but moreso, I hope that she has been 'educated'. THAT really would be the most important outcome. Thanks again - great, great stuff...
