She didn't want to like it. . .

"I am also troubled by the thought that a meat-based diet has a greater environmental impact than a vegetarian diet. Meat production uses up more water and energy than grain farming, according to the WorldWatch Institute, an independent think-tank in Washington, D.C. Producing one calorie of flesh (beef, pork or chicken) requires 11 to 17 calories of feed - grain that could be fed directly to humans. In the United States alone, livestock are fed enough grain and soybeans each year to feed the entire human population five times over, according to the Institute."

Because we all know, that if I didn't spend that $5 on the chicken breast, I was going to spend that $5 on grain to share with my friends.

Also, if she read the book, why would she be buying 7-11 beef jerky that contians sugar or protein bars that aren't on the list?

Here's a copy of an email sent to Dear Ms. Feibel:
Some of us would consider ourselves immeasurably fortunate if the only reason we had for dieting was to get into a dress. Unfortunately, as in my case, I have to take my way of eating very seriously otherwise I will DIE very soon. So taken from my perspective, your article was very flippant and shallow and did many people a disservice who may have benefited from this way of eating that might eventually prolong and save their lives. If all you had to lose was 5-7 pounds, you didn't have to make such a big production out of it and then slander a perfectly healthy way of eating. Controlling carbohydrates is not a fad diet but a LIFELINE to healthy living. Fad diets are just that, a diet for someone shallow like you who needs to lose 5-7 pounds quickly. But comparing Atkins or any other low carbohydrate diet to fad diets is irresponsible and misleading. As for the cost of food. What value do you place on your life? When you're young and healthy you probably don't even think about it because you're too busy spending money on clothing, make-up, manicures, fancy hair cuts, fast cars, jewelery, furs, trips, eating out, etc. which are a lot more important than what you put in your mouth. Besides a dozen eggs will provide a breakfast each day for a week and cost, what (?) maybe $1.29 Canadian. Very expensive. A red bell pepper will cost as much as a box of dry macaroni and cheese to which you still have to add margarine and milk. But which is better for you? And have you really looked at the cost of breakfast cereals, granola and prepared oatmeal lately? Anything that is prepared, processed and then canned, frozen or packaged is far more expensive in the long run than fresh vegetables, dairy products, raw nuts and seeds, meats and fish and a lot less healthy. Sounds to me like you just needed to write an article, any article. Next time read the book thoroughly and all the way through and you won't be making such asinine statements as those that appeared in your article.

I thought her article was a little better than most that I have read, but her whole premise that a meat-based diet is too environmentally expensive is ridiculous. Beef and poultry growers use feedgrain because it is one heck of lot cheaper than grass or other freerange options. In addition, big agribusiness has run smaller farmers out of business and poisoned a lot of water and land - this won't change just because you change the consumers of the grain. Cattle, poultry or people, the grain will still be grown and will still be consumed. Meat diets or vegetarian diets make no difference. She needs to get her facts straight.

Thanks, I would have written a response myself but it wouldn't have said it as well as you did.

My reply:

"Babson has worked with many obese patients, and said she has never seen anybody follow the Atkins diet for longer than two months."

How odd. She must not have worked with very many people. For instance, if she knew me, she would know somebody who has lost 51 pounds in the last 8 months on Atkins without a single slip. Perhaps you should check back with Ms. Babson after she has more work experience and see if her views have changed.

Sorry you had such a bad time with Atkins. But then, if you're only trying to lose a few pounds for a wedding, it probably isn't important enough for you to grasp the issues involved.
