You don't hear this breast-feeding thing as much anymore, but for a long time it was like gospel.

I never believed it. For one thing, I was breast-fed and my skinnier sister wasn't.

Chalk one up for moms. They have taken so much blame for so many irrelevant reasons over the years for their children's obesity. I don't know why we're having so much obesity lately, but I doubt it's because of breast-feeding or over-loving your children or rewarding children with food or raising them to be neurotic, etc.

Glad they've overruled it and that mothers will continue to breastfeed without fearing that they are making their children obese!

An interesting reasearch on obesity is taking place in deCode genetics here in Iceland, and I'll paste in a quote taken off their site:

"Reykjavik, Iceland, September 30, 2003

deCODE Announces Milestone in its Obesity Alliance with Merck

deCODE has discovered a gene with certain variations that predispose to obesity and others that predispose to thinness

deCODE genetics (Nasdaq/Nasdaq EuropeCGN) today announced that it has achieved a milestone under its alliance with Merck to develop novel treatments for obesity."

A huge discussion has followed as you can imagine and people are thinking well hey let's all eat and eat since they'll have a pill out next year to melt the fat! Ofcourse not; firstly, serious drugs, on average, take about 8 years in the making, and secondly if there will be a "real" diet-pill then it certainly will not be sold without prescription and will be under careful monotoring. IF they do manage to produce a pill that is.
But this is good news, and people are finally understanding that obese people can not simply be judged as lazy "pigs" with no self control.

If you're interested in reading more, have a look at www.decode.com, they are making wonderful findings up here.

All my best!
