|
quote:
One thing that has been found is that high-protein diets can cause dehydration.

While the tone and intent of the article is wrong, we shouldn't be so defensive that we can't acknowledge a true statement. There's another thread on this same forum that links to the Atkins site where they stress the importance of drinking lots of water. Why is that important? Because if you Mickey Mouse around on this WOE, you CAN allow yourself to become dehydrated, and that can pose a number of risks, all of them unnecessary. Low-carbing dehydrates the body in a number of ways: a) It reduces the level of muscle glycogen, which retains body water. b) It changes the levels of the adrenal hormone aldosterone which is what makes us retain water. c) It changes the levels of the hormone cortisol to the same effect. d) The extra nitrogen in the larger portions of protein that we eat has to be pissed out in the form of uric acid. e) Ketones have to be pissed out so we can maintain our blood pH. f) Exercise. People going on diets often start a new exercise regimen simultaneously. Maybe you can think of more reasons. I think it's widely accepted that a lot of the initial weight loss is water weight. If that gives people some encouragement, that's fine. The real advantage of low-carbing is that it's easy to KEEP ON LOSING real weight after that initial weight loss without having to starve yourself or bear insufferable cravings. Drink your water, eat your vegetables, get your checkups and you'll be fine. ************** "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. Then on the way out, slam the door." |

| The operative word in the original quote is "CAN". Low carb "can" cause dehydration. Which is why you need to drink extra. And, as an aside, back in my old weight watchers days, we were always told that our initial weight loss was water, too. In that respect, low carb is no different than any diet. BTW, I've lost 100lbs of water. ROFL. But you're right Dr. I - the article does make some interesting points. Dr. Willett has certainly done a lot for the idea of "fat is not the enemy". I'm not smart enough to evaluate the conclusions he draws on research data. But I do know what's worked for me so far, and how many veggies I eat every day. LCandrea |

| I am sick of this attitude. It seems like people don't want others to be successful. I wonder if the author of this article read any of the theory behind low carb diets. maybe we should send them the atkins book and some of the before/after pictures from this site. Good luck all!! | What I find frustrating is that in all the articles that mention the initial water weight loss (be it 4 pounds or 14 pounds) none of them go on to talk about the weight loss after that. I mean really...it's just like all the articles that only mention the induction phase of Atkins. I am on OWL and I can say in all honesty that I have never eaten this well! I have berries with breakfast every day and lots of veggies. As a matter of fact, the other day I realized that I didn't eat any meat, poultry or fish all day. It's slanted reporting that gives people the wrong impression of this woe. I do agree with Dr. I. though. I make sure I get 70-100oz of water a day. Started Atkins 10/27/03 182/155/142 |
