| ... so does anyone else find it humorous that the "minister of citrus," who's all worked up about the juice issue, is named "Booomhower" just like Hank Hill's oddball friend? | Grapefruit justification: It was indeed a great scientific study and the results were hopeful for many, BUT a positive result from a study does not change the sugar content of the fruit nor it's effect on our glucose level or the fact that it still will interfere with the absorbtion of some medications. Isn't it amazing how the anti-low carb industry gets peaved about us on one level and then go off on half-baked logic for their defense. Must be all of that sugar causing brain fog! Kim |

| As someone whose previous idea of heaven was 8 oz. of fresh-squeezed orange juice every morning, I've changed a lot. I think OJ is a healthy beverage, and fine for those who can accommodate it in their lives. For now, that isn't me. Sorry, all you OJ growers. Believe me, parting is such sweet sorrow! Barb L. | I looked up grapefruit and Florida grapefruit isn't that bad. A half a grapefruit was a little over 7.872 carbs. But oranges were a lot more. It is for maintenance but I think a fine thing to eat on maintenance. Even a half of an small orange is fine on maintenance. But one cup of orange juice was 24+ carbs. That is a big difference. In the article they talk about orange juice but the study is just grapefruit and not grapefruit juice. I find it interesting how things are done to confuse people. travellost-51 yrs Young 1/20/03 195/145 first time 1/5/04 second time 150/143/135 "I am allergic to carbs they make me break out in fat" |

| Boo-hoo! No one is dissing whole oranges or whole grapefruits (I read that grapefruit has lots of fiber). But orange juice IS practically sugar-water! There is absolutely nothing you get by drinking the juice (vitamins, etc) that can't be gotten from the whole fruit, for less carbs and more fiber. No-brainer. I feel bad for the farmers but come on, we're supposed to keep drinking what amounts for some of us to metabolic poison just because it hurts their business? Are we supposed to eat cookies and crackers for fear that the Keebler elves will get downsized due to lack of sales? *** Started Atkins Induction on 1/22/04 230/230/120 Tomorrow is NOW. |

| You know, I've thought of this before... The fiber in grapefruits and oranges is fairly low in carbs. There's probably no reason we couldn't eat the pulp. And juice machines are very good at separating pulp from juice. I wonder if there might be some good low-carb recipes possible that would use orange pulp as an ingredient. It's very aromatic stuff. Orange zest (peel) has been used for a long time, but it can be very bitter and upset your stomach. Orange pulp though... ************** "Sometimes I think you have to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who the person is you're talking to. | I've often "out-ed" myself as a citrus lover. While I don't drink fresh squeezed orange juice anymore, I put Valencias on my menu during season, having a couple of slices (thin slices, mind you) with a meal when they're in season. I also eat grapefruit whenever it comes to mind. I buy maybe one every week or so, peel it and put the sections into a ziplock or glad container. I eat them only a section or two at a time, but since it's "dessert" I don't crave more.
