| Presented for your edification by the management. Apr 22, 2004 16:35 ET Commentary on Refined Carbohydrates and Type 2 Diabetes in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 'Incorrect and Misleading,' says NFPA WASHINGTON, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Addressing a commentary in the May issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition linking consumption of refined carbohydrates to type 2 diabetes, Robert Earl, MPH, RD, Senior Director of Nutrition Policy for the National Food Processors Association (NFPA), made the following statement: "It is incorrect and even misleading to suggest the consumption of a specific food or food ingredient is the cause of obesity and the rising rate of type 2 diabetes in this country. Consumers need to know that excess calories from any source can contribute to increased weight in the absence of physical activity. "All foods can fit into healthful, balanced diets. Consumers should focus on how to eat, not what to eat. The Food and Drug Administration's Obesity Working Group recently released a report whose primary recommendation was 'calories count.' This recommendation reflects sound science and a wealth of research. And for those consumers who are interested in lower calorie alternatives, the food industry for decades has provided a wide variety of reduced, low, and no calorie food and beverage choices. "To manage weight, you must balance calories consumed against energy expended. To lose weight, calorie expenditure must be greater than calories consumed. A 'good food/bad food' approach to dietary advice does not work and ultimately will not help consumers achieve healthful lifestyles." NFPA is the voice of the $500 billion food processing industry on scientific and public policy issues involving food safety, food security, nutrition, technical and regulatory matters and consumer affairs. Source: National Food Processors Association Apr 22, 2004 15:34 ET Type 2 Diabetes Study Flawed and Misleading, Says the Corn Refiners Association WASHINGTON, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Audrae Erickson, President of the Corn Refiners Association (CRA) today issued the following statement in response to an article in the May issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition wrongly linking high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) to type 2 diabetes. "The North Port Study released today has numerous and significant factual errors and misrepresentations that mislead the American public. Diabetes rates are rising in many countries around the world that use little or no high fructose corn syrup in foods and beverages, which supports findings by the Centers for Disease Control and the American Diabetes Association that the primary causes of diabetes are obesity, advancing age and heredity. The author of this study completely overlooks and omits these and many other relevant facts that need to be considered in the fight against diabetes. This study does a disservice to the millions of families suffering with diabetes."
