| Our local newspaper carries and column titled "For Your Health" by Susan L. Trial, RNC, CHC. She wrote an article titled "More on the Low-Carb, High Protein Diet". She says that conclusive research is lacking. Also, that a "severe reduction in whole grains, fruits and vegetables can result in nutrition deficiencies as well as a lack of fiber, important to healthy digestion". She also says that "meat-heavy, high protein eating patterns are, over the long run, linked to osteoporosis, heart disease, difficulty concentrating, gall bladder problems, colon polyps and cancer, IBS flare-ups, elevated iron levels, rheumatoid arthritis, renal disease, kidney stones and gout, and they pose particular dangers for people with diabetes". Where did she get her info? She cites studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine from Duke University, The U of PA, and Philadelphia Medical Center; however, she doesn't cite what studies. Then she says "it does not matter that the high-protein, low-carb diet is effective for weight loss. The diet accomplishes the weight loss by placing an incredible amount of stress on the system and artificially manipulating the body for a period of time." What does that mean??? She says that if you want to learn more about staying on your low carb plan but want to get in more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, you can contact her, and she gives an e-mail address. I just want to e-mail her and tell her that she's not done her homework!! So many of us have improved our health with low carb, but she chooses to believe the "medical studies" instead of testimony from real people. I can't find anything about her or her column on the internet.

Except for my occasional lapses into the "basic American diet", I eat the lowcarb way all the time. My numbers (blood tests and panels) have never been better. My "health care providers" (PCP and OB/GYN) are both happy with my weight and my blood tests/screening. My weight loss is slow due to my metabolism being wrecked from yo-yo dieting for years, NOT from lack of effectiveness of the low carb "diet". If you ever find any info on the obviously research-challenge chick that wrote that "article", I'll write my "story" and mail her a copy of my "Full Blood Chemistry Results".....AND bet her my numbers are better than hers.

I love reading articles that claim there's "no conclusive evidence" for low-carbing. Heck, folks, there's no conclusive evidence for the USDA food pyramid, for low-fat dieting, for a lot of things unrelated to nutrition. "Science" is a process of weeding out options and only occasionally provides us with anything I'd call truly conclusive.

| Kim, your posting of your blood pressure readings got me to thinking.....mine used to stay around 131/80. The last two times I've had it taken, it's been 106/73 and 107/71. Since no one had ever said anything about it being high, I never paid much attention to it. I guess I need to Google "normal blood pressure" and see where I'm at. My lowest ever recorded was 99/54. I was coming out of surgical anesthesia and using a Demoral pump.....barely awake when they came in to check. Now I know WHY they come it to check. LOL! I agree with you about chips and fries not being natural. By the time all the processing has happened it is hardly recognizable as the veggie/grain/whatever it was before. :(

| I've stopped paying attention to the so-called experts and I listen to my body. It makes me so angry when I think about all the money I've wasted over the years paying "experts" to tell me that I was eating too much fat, when in fact, I was eating too many carbs. If you feel good, look good and your health stats are in check, what else matters? ![]() |

| I found this news item, dissing the glycemic index, saying it might not be a good thing for diabetics to rely on. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060301/...glycemic_index As if eating potatoes and white bread could be good for anyone, let alone a diabetic.

| http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071106/...NSVBokwlgE1vAI It's hogwash! Hmmm, maybe that's what they fed those who had lower cholesterol. Anyway, it claims that the Atkins diet was the worst for cholesterol and artery damage. Especially after the weight loss, when you're in maintenance. Of course, they claim that the lower fat diets are better. I'd like to see someone poke holes in this "study".

| As we've seen from Taubes book, a lot of the conclusions studies come from really aren't born out of the facts, or the studies weren't set up properly in the first place. OR, what seems to be a problem may not be. For example the cholesterol issue is extremely complicated. LDL isn't always the bad guy and according to Taubes, probably will go up on a diet with fewer carbohydrates.

| I can't even figure out what the heck they were doing with these people. "His team studied 18 people, each of whom completed a full month on each of the three diets. They were carefully monitored to ensure that they did not lose weight." Monitored to ensure that they did not lose weight? WTF?

| Go check out Michael Eades' blog today. He explains this "study", what it actually is, and all the holes in it. He's great about punching great big holes in such drivel. It's a really good read. http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/

| Yes, I saw that! It was very helpful to just be able to send a link to that to someone who lives to challenge my way of eating (but who could benefit from it) emailed me the link to the Yahoo article.
