Default CBS: New Cholesterol Advice Tainted?

(CBS/AP) Most of the heart disease experts who urged more people to take cholesterol-lowering drugs this week have made money from the companies selling those medicines.

Consumer groups on Friday blasted the new cholesterol guidelines as being tainted by the influence of major pharmaceuticals that make drugs such as Lipitor and Pravachol. Last year, drug makers earned US$26 billion worldwide on cholesterol-lowering medicines, the top-selling class of drugs.
I really had a feeling the new recommendations were bogus. A recommendation from the American Heart Association -- the same people that gave us trans-fatty acid margarine and denounced butter -- that people with relatively low cholesterol should lower it even more by taking new cholesterol drugs... It stunk.

I'm with you, Dr. I.

I've been watching the push for getting practically everyone on the planet on statins with great alarm. These things have side effects that can be quite serious - more serious than the possible consequences of a slightly elevated cholesterol number.

Cholesterol lowering drugs helping kids too

(July 22, 2004, 11:23 a.m.) The cholesterol lowering drugs that help protect the hearts of adults are showing the same promise in children.

A two-year study of more than 200 children with an inherited form of high cholesterol finds those who got the drugs called statins had much lower cholesterol levels than kids in the placebo group.

In addition, the medicine also helped reduce plaque build-up in heart arteries. There were no effects on development and no signs of organ damage.

Researchers say while this study suggests the drugs can work safely in children, they note more longer term studies are needed.

Children with this form of inherited high cholesterol, (familial hypercholesterolemia) have a high risk of developing heart disease at an early age.

The research was conducted at the University of Amsterdam and is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Guess there not makeing enough money!

If you really want a wake up call go to www.mercola.com and type in statins or cholesterol or any of those types of search terms. He's got a plethora of current articles on this topic.

Essentially, what I've gotten out of my reading is that hypercholesterolemia is a made up disease and that low cholesterol is every bit as dangerous (reality: moreso) as high is purported to be. In fact, there is evidence to suggest the fibromyalgia is linked to low cholesterol. I've known I had low cholesterol for years and the docs always thought it was fab. Not so...

At least now I have a clue as to why I do so much better on a high animal fat diet!

Thanks, Jason.

It's from my new court ID. The office of court administration was nice enough to give me a digital copy when I asked for one.

Have you settled in on the left coast and your new research yet?

(duh! never mind ... just saw the other thread you started. ***yawn*** all neurons are not on line yet. )
