Default those of you using green tea...

The following article was in todays AARP Bulletin...

A soothing cup of tea can protect the mind as well as comfort the body.
Reasearchers at Newcastle University's Medicinal Plant Reasearch Center in the United Kingdom found that tea, while hardly a cure, may delay the onset of Alzheimer's by inhibiting brain enzymes linkes to the disease.
The scientists give green tea the edge because its effect lasts a week, while black tea works for only one day.

Well, I've been drinking lots of green tea lately, so this is good news.

I must admit that I don't note any improvement to my memory at this point, but I suppose that this proves that I'm not suffering from early alzheimer's but just a continuing course of CRS, which I've had since I was about 5.

Hehe Maggie I think I've had CRS since I was 5 too. So I haven't noticed any more than usual sharpness (or dullness) of the mind lately either. Seems pretty par for the course. But that's really good news Lou. There are so many benefits of green tea, it's unbelievable. But I'm an herbalist at heart anyway, so I don't doubt the anti-alzheimer's claims. I just wonder how long true alzheimer's has been around (even before old Alzheimer himself discovered it.) It would be interesting to see if there are any correlations to it with our more chemicalized society. I truly believe all the chemicals in our foods and environment really contribute a lot to our health problems. And before good old civilized medicine came along, we humans were using natural compounds found in plant phytochemicals as medicines and without all the chemical manipulations that contribute to liver overloads and side-effects.

Pretty COOL!!!!!

My father was diagnosed with Alzheimers a few months. During a recent conversation with my mom about my dieting, I mentioned green tea and she said my dad has been drinking green tea for a long time every day. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell if it has slowed his progress but i don't think so as he's progressed quite abit in just a few months. Its such a nasty disease and affects different people at a different pace. So far, he still has very good recollection of us kids and who we are but is starting to have trouble with the grand kids as to who they are when they first come in and who they belong to. If I knew this tea would help him alot, i would have him drinking 10 cups a day. Its a tough disease to deal with and to watch.

Aw Tina, I'm so sorry to hear that. And yes, if there were any ironclad proof that it helps, that's what I would do too. Of course it could be too late too. I think they found that it's more preventative than cure. But who knows, maybe it would help slow the progress. What a scary disease!!!! Let us know if you need any support, we're here for ya.

My wonderful Grandma Grace was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in her mid-70's. She never got mean or argumentative as some patients do, thankfully. She just couldn't remember if she took her meds or if she went to mailbox, etc. After her 2nd close-call with a medicine overdose, my Aunt and Uncle moved her into a nursing home. She required little care other than supervision with her meds and reminders of who had been there that day, etc.

I've heard alot about this tragic disease being inherited, so I've been concerned for some time that I will end up with it....I DO have "CRS" pretty bad for someone who's 40! All kidding aside, I do think I have some adult ADD issues, which would explain alot of my focus/memory problems.

If dirinking green tea has these great benefits along with the others we already knew about, I'm now a dedicated daily green tea drinker. I think I'll dedicate a cup a day to my Grandma, who passed a few years ago.

Thanks, Lou for this info!

Thanks Barb, its nice to know there is support when you need it.

Maxi, I know just how you feel about the inherited part-it sits in the back of my mind. Unfortunately, my dad does have the argumentative part but I found that it only comes out when he gets confused with his surroundings etc. so, i guess its important to keep him at ease. I believe the medicine the dr has him on has helped and also they put him on an anti depressant medicine which has also helped with the mood swings. I think the one it is hardest on is my mom-the caregivers health also suffers due to the extra stress.

Thanks again for the support

Yes, the caregivers really have a tough time with it. And the sad part of it is that when it hits, the spouses or SO's are up in years too, so it's really hard for them.

I would say since this is suppose to delay the onset of Alzheimers, it won't do any good if the disease is already progressive. I don't think the claim is to cure it, or prevent it, but to help delay it.

My grandfather died 2 yrs 1 week ago.. he was burried on his 82nd birthday... and when he was in his later 70's he was working on the family farm and broke his hip. after that day he was not the same agin... they said he had altimerz (sp)

he had many times where they said he wouldnt make it threw the night.. but he had pulled threw.. after he passed away the dr said that he nolonger thought my pap had altimers that he thought he was suffering from lack of oxygen w/ a few other problems.. im not sure what i want to belive but it was horrible no matter what he died of to see a man of such strength and power unable to take care of himself..

i had the opportunity to watch a friend take care of her aged mother with alzheimers a few years ago...
it never ceased to amaze me how patient she was with her..
it was such that she couldnt even go into the dressing room to try something on without worrying about her mom wandering off.. she would enlist one of us to keep track of her for even those few MOMENTS of normalcy...
mostly she was a sweet dear wonderful little lady.. but you could see how she could get a little gruff with you if she was scared or not sure who you were or where her daughter might have gotten out of view for a moment or two..
it was heartwrenching for me to witness for even a few minutes from time to time.. i dont know HOW she took care of her so long..
her mom wandered off from homes even so she finally just took her home with her again..

i have always been grateful that as far as I ever saw .. she always knew who her DAUGHTER was...

((((((((tina)))))))))) my thoughts and prayers go out to you while you go through this difficult time ...
