HeyKim,

The Hand of God, with man and woman cradling each other, while emerging from the rock and all the while this is all being cradled by their maker. A lovely piece.

I only have one hand as a centerpeice sculpture and it's not sceduled for a couple years. I'll drop you a line when it starts fleshing out.

In the mean time all my hands including wrist are about 2" or 5cm, long. Still large enough for a lot of detail. I am working on 16" or 40cm, tall figures.

I have set the toaster oven out side on hot days as well when I had a ton of sculpture stages to do.

Kim,
I have not been to the Maryhill Museum yet but I very much look forward to it. They also have a world class collection of Chess Sets. Over 300 sets and usually 100 on display is what they told me over the phone. The ultimate difficult product for my studio will be sculpting and casting of a jumbo collectible chess set. I am waiting until my craftsmanship has improved before tackling it. A few years likely.

I gave up my vehicle a couple years ago as I couldn't always tell when I was competent enough to drive, baby brain stroke like symptoms. Dusty and I will get down there eventually. (Dusty is a friend and ex-employee from another business that wants to work for me full time again. Currently he is working in soapstone.)

The walls of my last apartment were decorated with pages cut out of jumbo books of Rodin sculptures. I am looking to hang other sculpors works in this new place but on the interior side of my front door at eye level is always "Danaide." That is the white marble woman washing her hair in a river. Mythology is supposed to be the source of the concept, but I think Rodin simply wanted to do an extensive study of a womans back. The thought is also one of my favorites, and I think of it often.

EDIT: Wow the Maryhill website has improved heaps.

Oops I guess the idea of cooking plastics in an oven is pretty wierd sounding. Its quite safe if done anywhere near correctly, non-toxic too. Not for everybody but a fun hobby for a lot of ladies.

Michael's is one of my favorite places, even though I've never worked in clay - well, not since I was a kid, anyway. They have many of the graphic, jewelry and faux stained glass supplies I like to play with, although I get a lot of my jewelry findings off the web. The Land of Odds is a source I use frequently for beads.

Locally, Michaels is easier to get in and out of than AC Moore which is in a major strip mall where Walmart & Sam's are the anchors ... and where the traffic engineers have yet to work out a reasonable solution to traffic problems.

I have to limit my visits to Michaels as i have a tendentcy to over spend.
They're great about exchanges, and if you look out for the sale papers you can often get a 40% discount on a large ticket item. Premo clay (high end Sculpty) is twice as expensive as www.clayfactoryinc.com but some times I need supplies NOW.

For online art supplies in general a lot of money can be saved at:
www.dickblick.com they have a huge inventory.

Maggie you ought to buy a pack of Premo and try making your own beeds. There are techniques to be found for making Tourqoise, Gold, Jade, you name it. A 2oz bar is about $2.50 and you simply cure it in a toaster or convection oven (Not Micro-Wave) at 275 degrees for 20 minutes.

Checkout these butterflies;
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/clay-polymer/
It is easy to join a Yahoo Group. And once you join a group just click on the Messages link and you are off and running. On other such groups I converse with other sculptors of simular materials and scale, and seriousness. Maggie I have met some very enthusiastic and helpful people in these forums. I have been isolating with my own work of late. But this has been a great places to hang out to share the inspiration. A lot like LowCarbEating is for recipies. Sometimes a few of the ladies plug in their web cams and show themselves working at the same time. I watched and chatted with five at one time once. Quite fun.

Oh and they almost all use toaster ovens!

Sure maybe we will hook up. Yes they are closed right now for the winter, their hours are, 7 days a week, including all holidays, from 9 am to 5 pm, March 15 through November 15.

It has always amazed me how hard it is to get large prints of sculptures. I have scoured the net looking for a good size print of Gianlorenzo Bernini's 'The Ecstacy of St. Theresa of Avila.' The only good sized print I have found is cropped and has a blue sky replacing the background elements that Bernini designed for it.

That is totally awsome SShimmerr! All three kids. Way to go.

Now I have to treat myself to this trip this spring.

Even if my own chess set is a ways off from being developed. I have discussed the concepts with the Maryhill Museum staff and they are interested in see it after the set is well under completion. The overall concept is important and relevant to contemporary man and woman kind. But the last year had to be spent mostly pulling my mental health together. With some success I might add. Now if I will just put a consistant effort toward finishing ONE sculpture product, (Yes I said product, money does have to be made, artist need to eat.) there is hope of relevance to the world beyond my imagination.
