| A traveler comes to a fork in the road and does not know which way to go to reach his destination. There are two men at the fork, one of whom always lies while the other always tells the truth. The traveler doesnt know which is which. He may ask one of the men only one question to find his way. What is his question and which man does he ask? |

| He could ask, "Are you dead?" Obviously, if he asks the liar, he will answer YES, which is a lie. If he asks the truthfull fellow, he'll answer NO, which is true! Do I get a prize now?? Char

| right@cgilson. Asking the liar, "Are you dead?" does NOT help the traveler figure out which way to go. And Char asked both the truth teller and the liar...you can only ask ONE... It was funny as all get out though.... |

| There was something similar to this in the movie "Labyrinth" involving talking door knockers. Wish I could remember what the heck the answer was!! Something like asking one of them, "If I ask him which way to go, what will he say?" Oh darn...you would think that after watching that movie umpteen times I would have some idea. Never mind...move on to the next person's guess.....LOL...Wait wait wait...if you ask the liar which way the honest person would say...he will lie and tell you the wrong way. If you ask the honest person which way the liar will say....he will tell you the wrong way, because that is what the liar would say. So either way, you choose the opposite way. Am I at all close?

| Answer: He asks either man, "If I were to ask you if this is the way I should go, would you say yes?" If the man he asks is the one who tells the truth, he will of course get the right answer. If the man he asks is the one who always lies, that man lies about the answer he would give, thus giving the correct answer. By forcing the liar to lie twice, one lie negating the other, the man forces him to tell the truth. |
