Hi, my friends
I rarely, if ever, post appeals, so please forgive me if this is an intrusion.
Many pet caregivers were separated from or forced to abandon animal companions during the Gulf Coast Katrina evacuation. Few Katrina refugee shelters accept pets. The images of those cats and dogs being left behind when the bus pulls away, or awaiting on rooftops for rescuers who pass them up, is truly wrenching. Animal rescue and recovery efforts are underway, but desperately lacking in resources.
I cannot imagine how difficult the decisions were for setting the rescue priorities in the Gulf Coast. The priority was set for saving human life, and I cannot find it in me to fault that decision.
This announcement from the New Orleans Craigslist discussion forum sheds some light on the plight these smaller Katrina victims. Please follow the link to the Louisiana Humane Society for a first-hand understanding of the situation. I know most of us cannot answer the cry to help animal shelter workers with the hands on help needed. But maybe we can at least give them some additional resources. There is a Paypal link at www.HumaneLA.org
I'm sure most of you have already been generous with your relief donations. But, if you can, please consider a further donation for these most helpless Katrina victims. Please share this message with others.

Note that there are numerous Humane Societies coming into the state soliciting donations, including the national one which (from my understanding) has a $25M grant and employees that make 6-figure incomes, MEANWHILE the local Louisiana Humane Society struggles to pay their bills.. Please, if you're going to donate, make sure you're helping put money directly into the community.

NEW ORLEANS, SEP 8, 2005. Despite the heroic efforts of volunteers and animal groups from both Louisiana and around the country, time is running out for the animals trapped in New Orleans, after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Help is desperately required to rescue animals trapped in the flooded ruins of New Orleans or roaming the streets in hungry packs.
Help is also urgently required to help care for the hundreds of animals rescued and located in shelters with no power or running water.
