Default Good Neighbourly Advice

Hi everyone

I need some advice, especially from animal lovers. I have been fortunate enough not to lose any beloved animals as mine are quite young. However, I run into my neighbour the other day to discover that she had to have her 14 year old dog put down. I don't really speak to many of my neighbours except for this couple and another next door, and even then just to say hello and exchange Christmas cards.

I was very sad to hear about her dog and I know she is very upset. I was wondering what I could do for her. I thought maybe a card?

What can I do? I wish to be a good neighbour but I do not wish to intrude or upset her.

A simple card, acknowledging her loss, would be a sweet gesture. Especially if she was especially fond of the pet. Just a nice "I'm thinking about you. I know you'll miss ___."

I know I'd appreciate a card if I lost a pet.

Would it be really tacky if my pets said they missed the little dog and knew he had been very happy with his owners?

No, that's not tacky, not to a pet lover, anyway. It shows your love for pets, and your concern for the loss. You are sweet to think of your neighbor.

I have to agree, I don't think it's tacky, either. It probably seems silly to someone who doesn't have pets, but not to those of us who do. I think letting her know you realize she's suffered a loss in her "family" is a very thoughtful thing to do.

Your kitties look like sweet things!

I agree that it would not be inappropriate for you to mention their sentiments in you condolences. As a mother of various furkids, I would certainly be comforted by the thoughts.

I agree with the advice above. You might check a local pet shop. The one I shop at has condolence cards for pets. Cute cute cats!

It's not soccer! It's FOOTBALL! ha ha We call what the Americans play "American Football".

I support my local team, they are called Preston North End.
