I have a Tanita scale which recently displayed the "battery low" prompt. Unfortunately, after I changed the batteries, the scale never worked again. I contacted the company and they said it probably needs to be sent in for recalibration, but the customer service rep also said that would cost about as much as a new scale. I'm pretty disappointed; guess I thought for what I paid for this one, it would work beyond its first change of batteries. At any rate, I need to go scale shopping and because of this experience, I'm not sure I want to buy the same brand again (but might...hard to say at this point). Any recommendations? Thanks in advance, Aderyn

Bummer Aderyn. My tanita b.f. scale is 4 years old so I don't know why yours would die so quickly. I'd be tempted to try and fix it myself. have you tried shaking and banging it. That has worked for me in the past. LOL seriously it has. Are you sure the replacement battery was fresh? If my tanita scale had only lasted through one battery I'd probably not buy another.

Hmm, good ideas! I'm sure the batteries are fresh. It's the kind that takes 4 AA batteries. I read some online reviews and learned that the new lithium battery models last much longer; long enough to be warranted for 10 years, in fact. Needless to say, at this point a 10-year warranty sounds pretty good to me. Most of the reviews also say Tanita is still one of the most accurate for weight (they all seem to be a little dicey when it comes to BFI). To add insult to injury, what it does is shows the OL code every time I step on, which stands for "over limit." I can't help but feel kind of insulted after all this successful low-carbing to keep being told I'm over limit. The scale's limit is 330 pounds, so I know it's not right (thank God for LC so I can say that with confidence), but it's still kind of a slap in the face, LOL! I'll definitely try some shaking and banging it -- thanks for the suggestion. Aderyn

| Just another vote for Tanita, here. I have one of the lithium models. No bells, whistles or body fat stuff. Just increments of .2 and Big NUMBERS to assist my less than perfect vision, LOL!

Just thought I'd report back that I did end up with a Tanita, again. I bought the cool looking, all-glass one with a lithium battery. It has the "hold the weight" feature that allows you to view the weight once you step off the scale, and nice BIG numbers with good contrast (ain't age great, Maggie?) Even though I was disappointed with the lifespan of my first Tanita, they still did have the features I wanted and the highest ratings, short of investing the money and floor space in a balance beam model. The new one actually has a 10-year battery warranty, so at least I will have some recourse if it stops working before then. Aderyn
