I've recently discovered an incredibly "novel" (no pun, ) thing - the library! I am late coming to this wonderful discovery. But, our budget has called for me to cut back on book buying, so I was forced to go. Yaknow - it's not too bad.

Anywhoo: Favorite of all time that I have read recently is

Water for Elephants, Sarah Gruen, I think. Basically about a circus, and the happenings around it. But, weaves masterfully through a couple of characters. Excellent read.

I've also read all the "Odd" books by Dean Koontz. Wonderful, wonderful and scary. About a young man who has premonitions about death, and also other things. They have Koontz's scary touch, but also some pretty quirky humor. Odd Thomas is the name of the central character. The books are written in the first person. Excellent.

I just finished James patterson's latest, "Step On A Crack." Wow! Talk about a thriller. I stayed up late, late, late, to finish it. About a policeman who is a hostage negotiator with a gang who have taken over St. Patricks Cathedral im NYC. Very contemporary and very good.

I just discovered J.A. Jance, and am so glad to have done so. I'm reading through a series about a female detective.

Thanks for starting this thread, Maggie.

I've enjoyed the "Odd" books, too, Peg. I'm an old Koontz fan from way back.

Just started Cormac McCarthy's "The Road." McCarthy has the BLEAKEST perspective of anyone I've ever read, but he sure can write! His writing is not to everyone's taste -- kind of Hemingway-esque -- but he's one of those authors who just makes me shake my head and marvel while I'm reading him.

PS: Still haven't found the initiative to finish "Wicked," sigh...
PSS: Kelly, I agree about "A Million Little Pieces." Even though it turns out it was not quite the fact-filled autobiography he claimed it was, it was a riveting, inspiring read. Luckily, I read it before the Oprah outing, so had no preconceived notions about it.

I just finished "How to Be Good" by Nick Hornby - very good! Quite funny and thought-provoking at the same time. Am now starting The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, and have The Friday Night Knitting Club waiting, too. (Took a class to learn how to knit this winter and am hooked! Also heard that Julia Roberts is going to make this book into a movie, so I picked it up to read first).

I just finished "The River of Doubt" by Candice Millard. It is a non-fiction fascinating account of Theodore Roosevelt's exploration of a 1,000 mile uncharted Amazon tributary.

Henry, it sounds like a fascinating book. Have you ever read Nicole Maxwell's "Witch Doctor's Apprentice"? She traveled down the Amazon looking for medicinal herbs, and her adventures are extremely interesting. Her interactions with the different tribes, how she dealt with the medicine men (using artificial eyes!), and her findings about the different plants is really good reading. It was originally written in 1961, and updated several times. I first read it in school, read it again a few years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it the second time.

Right now I'm reading some Miss Marple stories. My son found the book at a yard sale, it was like new, and I'm sure they are stories I've never read before. Looking forward to it; I love Agatha Christie. Especially Poirot stories.

Poirot rules, Nita! ... and River of Doubt sounds like a "bully read", Henry!
