Default Whatcha reading?

I suspect that, with the deep freeze out there for most of us, I'm not the only one who likes to curl up on the couch with a good book.

For me, I just finished Deep Storm, by Lincoln Child. A great yarn and VERY well told! It made for an enjoyable and suspenseful weekend. It's the story of a Navy veterin turned MD, who is commissioned for a highly secretive mission on an oil drilling rig. But, it's not really a rig any longer. It's a cover for a top secret investigation into something buried deep in the ocean floor. Super junk-food for the mind!

Now I have started on Looking For Jimmy, A Search for Irish America, by Peter Quinn. This is a collection of essays written by Mr. Quinn, who earned his PhD in History, found the market for history professors glutted, wound up taking a "job" as a speech writer. He, nevertheless, arose early each morning to work on his historical interests. These essays are about his quest to understand his own roots. An Irish Catholic raised and educated in the Bronx, Mr. Quinn looks at the "evolution" of the potato famine refugees in New York City. I have a great interest in this, being purely half Irish (and purely half Sicilian, from which side I clearly inherited my taste buds. LOL!). "Jimmy" is shorthand for the 2nd generation of Irish potato famine immigrants - moving from "Paddy" the despised poor Irish immigrants to "Jimmy" the slick, street smart, Irish American typified by Jimmy Walker and Jimmy Cagney. No junk-food here. I see he has written a couple of novels, so I may check them out to see how he does with that genre.

How about you?

I am finishing "A Corpse in the Koryo" by James Church. It is an intresting detective story set in North Korea. The author's name is a pseudonym. He is a former intelligence agent who was in Korea for years.

YES! So glad someone started this. I have been composing a list of must-reads, because I've come across some good ones lately.

Some of my favorites...

A Complicated Kindness - can't remember the author's name
Special Topics in Calamity Physics - Marisha Pessel (sp?)
The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold
White Teeth - Zadie Smith
Me Talk Pretty - David Sedaris
Good In Bed & In Her Shoes - Jennifer Weiner

oh, there are more, but I keep forgetting them! Will update soon!

Last week I read Harry Potter 1-3, and I'm currently plowing through book 4. It appears I have "caught the fever" a little later than everyone else

I am reading Coffin Dancer by Jeffery Deaver (he wrote the Bone Collector)

I hadn't read any of his books so I borrowed from a friend, so far pretty good.

I loved the Sedaris book, Kelly. I read it on a recommendation from Eddie150 right here on this board! LOL!

I love getting info about what's "out there."

I just started "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" by Kim Edwards. It's about a doctor whose wife has twins, a boy and a girl, and the girl is born with Down syndrome. The doctor had grown up with a sister who died in childhood from a heart defect and feels he cannot face a situation like this again, so decides while his wife is still under the influence of anesthesia to tell her the baby girl died. He gives the girl to his nurse, with instructions to place her in what turns out to be a horrendous "home for the feebleminded." The book, set in the 1960s, follows the stories of the twins by following the stories of doctor, his wife, and the people who care for the little girl. So far, it's riveting!

I'm also reading Gregory Maguire's "Wicked," which is sort of Wizard of Oz: The Rest of the Story. I've seen the play (outstanding!) and wanted to read the book it was based on.

Ohh, Aderyn, sounds like I have to find Kim Edwards book. That sounds right up my alley.

I just finished Stephen King's....Cell. I would suggest that you don't waste your money on it. Not his best works. Next I'm on to another Nora Roberts book...Dream Keepers.

I recently finished "Under Orders" by Dick Francis, his first novel since his wife and collaborator died. I always like the twists and turns in his books. I also love the way P.D. James weaves a web so tight that there is no way to figure out whodunit before the end. Sadly, I have little time to read for just enjoyment anymore, so usually wait for vacation time for that. (I'm a sucker for British murder mysteries.)

"America, The Last Best Hope" by William Bennet is fantastic if you are any bit of an American history buff. (And I will sheepishly admit I preordered Harry Potter 7. I don't know if I can last until July).

Carolyn, I am kind of having the same experience with "Wicked." I was really looking forward to it, since my sister said there was so much more in it than was shown in the play. It's an okay read, but it doesn't hold my interest nearly as well as I expected it to. I'm about halfway through and will probably finish eventually, but it doesn't compel me to pick it up. I'm finding myself thinking that the editing made necessary to fit the story into a play was just what the doctor ordered!

*A Million Little Pieces
and
My Friend Leonard - James Frey
I love and respect Oprah, ...but these books are very moving!!!

*Sex and the City - Candace Bushnell
I knew this wouldn't be the same as the tv series, but it was still disappointing:(
