Default What's your favorite "classic" novel?

I am in a book club that my friend recently started. We decided to read a combination of new and "classic" novels. (About 1 classic every 3 months or so). We just finished 2 current novels (How to Be Good & The Alchemist), and we'll be reading Family Tree in May, so it's probably time for a classic in June. Was wondering what your favorite classic novel is?

(And if you have any good suggestions for current novels that would be good book club books, that would be great too!)

For me, probably either "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll or "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte. I love the whimsy in Alice, as well as thinking about its critique of the educational system and so forth. And Jane Eyre is just plain old romantic, sigh....
Also would probably add Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God," depending on how we're defining "classics."

Aderyn's choices are excellent, as well as "Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There". And anything by Charles Dickens.

20th century classics - well, I'm a mystery nut, so I think Ellery Queen stories would be great, as well as all of Agatha Christie's works. And every Nero Wolfe story. But that's just what I like.

And if you want to go really way back, read some Shakespeare. Not actually novels, but good reading.

Happy reading!
