Default hubby having colonoscopy

on Saturday and he's SO cutely nervous about it! Well, I know what to do for myself, bring along a book, some knitting and a lunch carrier w/ good lc choices in it. BUT what, besides water, should I bring for him for afterwards?? For the ride home I mean. I have planned light meals for him once we ARE home and I also have a stack his favorite DVD's ready (I anticipate much laying on the couch and groaning for sympathy from him . . . trust me, I know my guy!) Besides water, can you suggest anything else, crackers maybe?? (he's not low carbing . . . yet *snicker*)

Thanks in advance - yea, it's going to be an interesting weekend at our place!!

(and yes, I really am hoping he'll come home and just sleep most of the afternoon so I can get things done!! - gads, that isn't mean is it??)

Tara,
Your *patient* will most likely recieve an amnesic drug as well as a sedative for his procedure, and this combo is called *conscious sedation*. He may be awake on the ride home and ask the same questions over and over and over and ...well, you get it. It's the meds, and they take about 4-6 hours to wear off. For his first meal after the procedure, get him something that's not to terribly spicey, ie: milkshake or malt, soup or a sandwich without onions, peppers etc. You might want to do a drive through or drive in and take it home for him to eat. Taking a sedated amnesic person into a restaurant can be a challenge.
After you get him home, put him to bed and he should take another *power nap* lasting anywhere from 1-3 hours. STAY with him(as in the house or general vicinity) until he is awake and fully concious and aware at home. [Folks have been known to try and drive, mow the lawn, BUY A CAR etc until they sleep it off.]

amnesic drug - LOL all my co-workers are telling me "you can get him to promise you ANYTHING at this point!!"

I wasn't going to take him OUT to eat, just wondered if he would want a nibble on the way home. Depending on traffic that drive will be 30 - 45 minutes long.

THANK YOU for warning me about the babbeling, he's bad enough without being doped up!!!

Tara, I had a colonoscopy last month. I was given something called "versed" (sp?). I had no lingering effects, though I did ask my dw to be present when the Dr. gave the results, because I had heard that the patient may not necessarily remember what the Dr. said. I was not tired when I returned home and I had already planned a meal of a plain cheese omelet for lunch which worked fine. By dinner, I was ready to eat normally.

Henry, fab advice - he loves cheesy eggs and that would be so easy for me to make and still keep my ears open in case he 'needs' me. I'm sure he'll be ok . . . it's just between his nerves, the prep and having to get up early on a Saturday, I'm betting hard cash he'll be doing the dieing swan act on our couch most of the weekend. Thankfully, we've a DVD collection to rival any store!!

the prep on the day before is the worst part of the procedure. I rememeber the test while it was happening but not the start and end of the test. after not eating anything solid for 42 hours I had my sister drive me to the nearest restaurant. I had no trouble eating. I did nap afterward though

I'm with Rob.
the procedure and the aftermath were nothing (I remember nothing of the procedure)

the day before - prep - I don't think I can ever, ever drink gatorade again.
