10 years! Holy bleep! And I sucked it in in only a few days. It makes me feel a little guilty. Like when you work for days on planning and preparing a special meal, and then in an hour it's over. You know, thinking about it, (except for the ending, maybe) this would be a great book to read to a kid. You could make it last a year! As for the ending, you could probably have discussions about it for another six months.

Lee always enjoyed being read to, even though he was already reading before he went to school. I think there is some human connection forged by reading to one another (parent to child, adult to adult, etc) that we tend to forget with so many quicker forms of communication.

But, I digress. For a quick read, I managed to sneak in a Stephanie Plum "numbers" novel (by Janet Evanovich) , like for dessert. Like a sorbet. Light, quick and fun.

Just finished James Frey's "Bright Shiny Morning." He's the one who got in so much trouble via Oprah et al when it was revealed that his rehab novel ("A Million Little Pieces") contained a lot of fabrication. If you can forgive him that, "Bright Shiny Morning" is a really good read.

Also just finished an older one, "Waiting for Snow In Havana" by Carlos Eire, an autobiography of a man who was a boy in Cuba pre-Castro, then was sent by his parents (and never saw his father again) to the U.S. post-Castro, alone, at the age of 10. In Cuba, he was a rich, somewhat spoiled kid; in the U.S., just the opposite. I thought it was GREAT! Sad, funny, uplifting -- it's got it all.

Maggie - i agree with your opinion about reading to kids. Made all the difference with me. My dad read me Dr. Doolittle when i was six and by the end of first grade i read it cover to cover by myself.

Started reading the ED McBain yesterday. Then today i drove to the lake to read. on the way i realized i'd forgotten the book so i stopped at the library and got a few. so now I'm reading Stuart Woods Beverly Hills Dead and the ed Mcbain. sheesh

I'm with you on the "reading to one another" issue. I was "read to" things far beyond the age at which I could have read them myself. It's different. There's a sharing involved.

As for Edgar Sawtell, it's on its way to my judge's secretary. She had heard about it (probably on NPR as you did) so I offered her my copy. I cautioned her that any smudges on the pages were actually food, no matter how they may appear. ( Living with only fur kids, I often read - silently - while I eat. They don't seem to enjoy being read to. )

Exactly Maggie!

Finished the Ed McBain but I was almost to page 200 of the stuart woods when I lost the Da*ned thing. So unless someone turns it in to the library I'll have to replace it at my own expense. grrrr

Next up Bury the lead by David Rosenfelt. I've also been skimming around Scott McClellan's What Happened: Inside the Bush whitehouse and Washington's culture of deception. I'll start from pag one soon.

I had to come here to catch up on Rob's reading!

I read Sugar Queen, a cute read.
On to a Stephanie Plum novel. #14. It is actually taking me a while to get through. I am not enjoying it as much as I have her other ones. Seems same old, same old with not as many laughs...
I have been doing more crosswords lately, so not reading as much.

My Sister's Keeper
The Tenth Circle
(can't remember the name of the other one)
getting ready to read her Change of Heart.

I've been reading the Archangel series by Sharon Shinn. It's light sci-fi and not at all what I'd have normally picked out for myself, but I was given the paperbacks and am on the third (and maybe last) of the series. Enjoyable.

Just finished Blood Noir by Laurel K Anderson. Can't say that I'd recommend it for the squeamish. It's rather explicit.

I read the 14th Plum book as well, Mab and I agree. The characters are getting a little stale ... 'cept for Stephanie's grandma.

"The Plague of Doves" is an interesting read. (Louise Erdrich, author) The easiest way to describe it as tracing a long convoluted (meaning lots of jumping back and forth in time) circle of events over an extended period, involving the Native Americans, non-natives, and those in between, in a small town in South Dakota. It's almost too artsy by half. On the other hand, I did finish it.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread. I've been in low reading mode for the past couple weeks.
Just finished Winter of the wolf moon : a mystery by Steve Hamilton. Next up Sudden death by David Rosenfelt.

Thanks, Rob, for resurrecting the thread. I always check for new books to read.

I just finished re-reading Pillars Of The Earth and the follow up book World Without End, both written by Ken Follett. Loved those books.
I liked his work so much I found A Place Called Freedom on my bookshelf that I had not read. He wrote this in 1995.. starts out quite good.

Henry, if you are following this thread.. did you finish Pillars of the Earth ? did you like it .?? and have you read the 2nd book.

Roberta
