Dose anyone out there knows how to handle Fibromyalgia during Atkins? Fibro hurts your muscles and joints and you need to have more muscle tone to relief the pain that there is no cure for it.

Lanny,

I have FM. I have found LC to be extremely helpful. I've got a bunch of info about it on my personal website which is in my sig.

Hang in there...

Blessings!

I was just browsing in Borders today, looking at books related to fibromylagia and chronic pain syndrome. The Chronic Pain Management book suggested a low carb diet, especially featuring fresh vegetables and cold water fish. I believe the directive for cold water fish was as a source of Omega 3/6 essential fatty acids (EFAs), which are believe to reduce inflammation. If I recall correctly, that book also recommended reducing the amount of packaged, boxed foods consumed.

In a different book on managing inflammation, besides to also suggesting increasing EFAs, the author suggested that vegetables from the nightshade family may cause inflammation in suspectible types. The nightshade family includes potatoes, tomatoes, and bell peppers. I assume all peppers (other than the black peppercorn) are members of the nightshade family.

So, you might consider increasing your EFAs (cold water fish, flaxseed, borage) and experiment with not eating any of the nightshade plants for a while.

For my part (and I've had fibromylagia symptoms for over 25 years), sleep is one of the most important factors in controlling muscle pain. Many FM sufferers are not aware that they have poor quality sleep patterns or the role this plays in muscle tension.

So, anything you can do to help you sleep better, will probably help with your FM symptoms.

Lately, I've enjoyed a "nightcap" of half-and-half, Da Vinci syrup, water, and ThickenThin/Not Sugar before bedtime. Milk contains amino acids that contribute to sleepy feelings. Turkey also contains amino acids that cause sleepiness.

Terry's Nighcap

1/4 cup half-and-half
1/8 cup water
1-2 tbs Da Vinci sugarfree syrup (I prefer vanilla or coconut)
1/2 tsp of ThickenThin/Not Sugar (TTNS)

Put the liquid ingredients into a fairly large mug or glass. You need a big glass because the volume doubles when you whip it up with TTNS.

Nuke the liquids for 30-45 seconds until warm, but not too hot to drink. Add the TTNS and whip the beverage with a mini-milk frother. I supposed you could use beaters or a blender, but I find the mini-frother is the easiest cleanup (Marcie's milk frother article).

The drink will thicken substantially and double in volume as you whip it.

Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon (yawn...)

You are right, Lanny, medical science doesn't seem to know yet why some people get the fatigue and achy muscles and other symptoms associated with fibromylagia.

Sometimes, you can find the Da Vinci sugar free syrups at TJMaxx or Marshalls, though they don't carry all of the flavors. My local healthfood store just started carrying 1 or 2 of the sugarfree flavors. Usually, I order it from www.netrition.com, as they have pretty good prices and low shipping fees.

I just got some Trader Joe's coconut oil, too. Though I haven't done much with it yet except fry eggs. It has a very mild flavor, if any. I'm sure I want to try the coconut oil/chocolate recipe soon. Sounds yummy!

Have you looked into the possibility that you may have Candida???? I think most people who have Fibro. have Candidiasis. (yeast overgrowth) Do a search on the internet on Candida and take the questionaire if you find one. If you might have it, start taking Probiotics (bifidophilus-refrigerated section of health food stores)

Have you done a lot of antibiotics throughout your life? If so, you most likely do have a yeast overgrowth.

Thank you for all the info especially on coconut oil and yes i will look into Candida. Just that i do get pain equally on both sides of the tender points. I also stopped the pills the doctor told me to take its been 2 weeks plus that ive been telling him that i get massive headaches all day long, constipation which i had to do a special treatment cause i havent went for 2 weeks, my periods are all screwed up too...etc etc...ive stopped the pills and i fell 75% better...he just didnt believe me and said i cant cause it takes a month before it does effect...yeah right...

re: candida, i dont have itches or hives, nor diarrhea, mood swings, depression, anxiety, and i never take antibiotics very rare ive taken that in my life time...but i do eat blue cheese...etc...

what i have is, joint pains, headaches on and off, fatigue and normal stuff that your work load (im in education) that would give you...

ive started the water cure...i always drank a lot of water even before atkins...i was never that over weight either...and i will go out and buy coconut oil later...after all it is good for your body...

so im no doctor but i know what i have is NOT that the doc says and im not going to take them stupid pills that makes me worst...i will find a way like im doing now on my own with natural products...i do go to acupunture and will start Yoga soon...

again thanks for all the info cause i sure learned a lot with you guys...your great

Lanny,

I know people that have FM also. They seem to have wonderful results using a product called OPC-3. It is an antioxidant. You can find it here: www.livehealthynow.unfranchise.com. Also on that web site is a questionare that will help you to know what supplements you need. Just click on the NutriPhysical icon and sign in. It's free.

Hi Helene:
I've had FM for years. It involves severe muscle pain, not joint pain. The muscle pain is what makes it different from arthritis, which causes joint pain.
From your symptoms, I would suspect TM, which is a pain in jaw, neck, shoulders, and especially headache caused by misalignment of the jaw and teeth. I wear a mouth guard at night for this.

Peace, Peg
