OK, I just had to send a shout-out to the Cubs fans...

I lived in Illinois for a couple of years, and some of the most fun I ever had was afternoons in the bleachers at Wrigley Field. There is nobody in the world as loyal as a Cubs fan, and it's good to see victory happen.
Congratulations...next year is here!!

As bad as Detroit did this season, 43 wins and 119 losses, they couldn't beat the record th Mets set in 1962 of 40 wins 120 losses. It was their first season as a team so that mitigates the shame somewhat. But I was living in Queens at that time, Home of Shea stadium. It sure foreshadowed many of their seasons that followed.

Okay, I need to be fair here. While the Tigers almost tipped over into validated sucksville by coming close to the Mets' record, I have a little bit of faith that Trammel will turn them around (my DH thinks I am delusional). Illich has commited to more $ to find some better players, so maybe there's hope for improvement next year. It's hard to have a winning team when your players are less than mediocre! Higgie...what a disappointment he's become. They got rid of their best pitcher, Weaver. WTH? Anyway, Go Blue!

I'm not a sports fan, but I just have to HOOT for the Cubbies, being in the Chi-town area myself. My nephew and 2 of his buddies took a goat down to Texas to "Reverse the Curse" He was on the local Chicago news. That was a hoot in itself just to see him on TV. He's the one named Comisky with the red hair if you happened to see it. WOOHOO, we have a celebrity in the family, LOL.

I'm almost afraid to hope.....the Cubbies haven't won an out of town pennant game since 1945. One of many of their rather startling records

Barb,

that was too funny!! i saw that on the news.

Do they still have that cute lil goat?

I've been a Cub fan as long as i can remember, early 70's - i was about 6 or 7.

I got a bit disgusted with the whoel league with the last strike in the 90's and really havent watched a game since.

When ever they have a good lead... you are always saying in the back of your mind.. there is still time to blow it, like Lee Smith always did.

They really do deserve this.. it's been such a long road for them, and the team has been so cheap for so many years - never being able to get some real talent.

I hope they kick the Braves butt. I'll never forget that one game where good 'ole Ted was snoozin in the stands!! How pathetic is that?!

I hope the Cubs go the distance. I spent an hour & a half on the phone this morning only to get tickets for game 3(if it happens).

Bosox-Cubs World Series would rock my world! Cubs are def. my second favorite team. If there was ever a fan base that can relate to the Redsox, its the Cubs fans. Barb what's that goat thing you're talking about???

Sigh. Though we're losing 1-5 at the moment, so its looking dimmer and dimmer that my boys are going to go any further than round 1. Where, oh where, has Manny's bat gone?!?!?!?! And Walker, my hero from last night, makes a 2-RUN ERROR today?!?!?! *Sob*

Well, Redsoxfan...

If they get by my A's, I'll pull for a Sox/Cubs matchup.

Until then...Go A's! 5-1 today... Gotta love that Barry Zito. BTW: last year he creditied his improved pitching to a new diet he was on that cut out all sugar. Now, he never said it, but it sounded suspiciously like an LC WOE to me.

PS. Game 1 probably hurt, since the Sox lost, but you have to admit it was a great game. Well pitched, hard fought, and exciting to the end...

Apparently there was some kind of curse put on the Cubs in the 40's or 50's because they wouldn't let some guy in the park with his goat. So he put a curse on the Cubbies. So my nephew and 2 of his buddies went down to Houston to see if they would let them in with a ticketed goat. They wouldn't, so the guys began to chant at the gate to "Reverse the Curse" LOLOL.

Crossing my fingers and toes for our Cubbies for tonight. I am afraid to watch, whenever I watch, my team (no matter which one) ALWAYS loses. I seem to be cursed too........

Barb,

i do recall something about that curse too - thinking mid-40's

and i was also wondering it that is where that tavern name came from ... Billy Goat's Tarvern down in Wrigley-ville

wouldnt it be something if that *curse* was reversed? that would be a hoot... and heck, it will make your nephew and his buddies famous!! I think there are enough superstitious folks down there that would totally praise what they did... adn really believe in it.

since there is nothing on the boob toob tonite.. i will probably watch the game... though sometimes it really is hard - since we can recall all the other outcomes.

I'll never forget the San Diego series...... they got smoked!!

Aw, Jim, seriously? You're an A's fan??? I don't know if we should be speaking right now, I"m a bit bitter at the moment. A bunt?!?! The guy BUNTS in extra innings with the bases loaded?!?!? And there's no easy out?!?!?!

All kidding aside though, despite the lose, I agree with you that Game 1 was a phenominal game. I was on the edge of my seat until I just couldn't keep my eyes open any longer and did one of those things were you fall asleep and don't even realize what you did until you wake up (which turned out to be a blessing as I missed most of the 12th and entirely missed that ill-fated bunt). I think the feeling in the Nation was pretty much that it was an all around good game; an extremely well fought game on both sides and sometimes you just lose those. Yesterday's 5-1 embaressment is an ENTIRELY different story. I still can't get over the 2-RUN ERROR. It haunts me I tell ya.

Barb - I LOVE teh goat thing! People here in Bosox Nation are ALWAYS doing things like that! Just a while back some guys got all this high powered sonar equipment and were searching a lake for a piano that the Babe had supposedly thrown in there in the winter of 1918-1919 (last winter he wore red soxs). And they were going to find it, bring it up, and rehab it. Thus breaking the "curse of the Bambino" and garunteeing us a World Series title. Last I heard, they were still looking (which may explain our current fortunes).
