I stumbled upon this by accident:

A couple of weeks ago I had a big aluminum stain on my kitchen counter. My new counters are *gasp* white! They will be replaced as soon as we are able to afford it -- probably 2 decades from now

Anyway, my kitchen was a horrendous mess and I had to move my kefir brewing station from its normal residence to a temporary place by the tea kettle, which happened to be where the marks were. I spilled some kefir in my process and wiped it up. The stain came up effortlessly! I thought that was very curious because I usually have to get out the non-abrasive bleach cleaner stuff to get those off. That was why the stain was still there!! I didn't have the time to think any more about it, though I did note the event.

Last night, I once again spilled some kefir in my process, and once again I had messy counters. Counters that had stains on them! This time they were RED stains... Thought this would be a good challenge for the kefir! I dabbed up some of the kefir onto my sponge and quickly whisked away the stain! Under normal circumstances, that stain would have required at least one big glob of the cleaner, and probably would have had to let it sit on it for a while!

I just love my kefir!

Blessings!

That's kinda scary. The things that we have discovered by pure accident are amazing.

I've never even tried kefir, and I'm curious, but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone in "real" life that's ever tried it either.

Maybe I'll get brave and get some grains and try it myself.

Kefir is a delicious fermented milk product. It's sort of like yogurt, but not quite as thick, It's drinkable.

I never tried it for cleaning, but I love it as a beverage. It is very friendly on my blood sugar, unlike yogurt which acts the same as milk for me, and I LOVE how it tastes.

You can find more kefir discussions in the Caveman Diet thread. I don't know how the tradition was started to discuss kefir there, since dairy farming is definitely post-cavepeople, but for some reason that's where it's traditionally been on this site. There's also a ton of information here: Dom's Kefir Page

You can often find kefir at the HFS, so you can try it out to see if you like it, before you start to "grow your own."

I know lots of folks now in real life that are hooked on kefir and its benefits! I've personally passed grains on to at least 6 friends and my mom. Yummy stuff!!!

Sharron, that's quite an interesting discovery! I could understand it if the kefir cleaned organic stains, after all think of all the hungry probiotics in there. But aluminum? You gotta love this amazing stuff! Maybe something to do with the slight acidity of kefir, or maybe just one of those wonderful mysteries to be enjoyed....

Gee, Beth, I sorta consider myself "real life" LOL! No, I take that back. I probably am more in the "unreal life" category
