| I was just wondering how many of you are using the Math U See curriculum? A friend of mine was struggling with her 8 year old and math. He's an exceptionally bright child and because of his parent's bents, I'm certain will achieve high marks in mathematics. Nevertheless, she couldn't get him to "get it!" She heard about Math U See and the rest is history! He's got his facts down and they are progressing quickly. We've been using Horizons math since day one almost. Somewhere along the way, they changed how they do things. We have been struggling with it. She came over and showed me how she and her son do it, and we were QUITE impressed! This program will make math FUN like it is supposed to be -- not a drudgery, as it has been! She is picking up a Foundations set for my K and 2nd graders, and she is getting an Intermediate set for my 6th grader at a home educators clearing house up North this weekend. We are excited to get started! In fact, I just let them skip their other math yesterday because it seems so WRONG after being exposed to this system. We hope to begin on Tuesday or Wednesday with the new curriculum. For those of you who have never heard of Math U See, and are interested, here's aMath U See chat session on a home schooling site that I found. The links to Math U See are in there. It would be helpful to read the chat session to the point where they give the links before looking at the Math U See website, so that you have some background first. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else had used it and wanted to chat a bit on the subject Blessings! | I just wanted to report that we started the Math U See this week. It is going really well. It is very logically presented. I really like the "at the student's pace" concept. My dd was fussing because she was "going to be behind again." I replied, "How can you be behind when you are going at your own pace???" She just stared at me ![]() I started them all at the same lesson in the Foundations book. My dd fussed about that too, because she is in 6th grade, but I explained to her that I wanted to be absolutely certain that she had all of the concepts down before starting her on the more difficult materials. Right now, we are blasting through the lessons very quickly. My son is in 2nd grade and it is helping him with a couple of concepts he had trouble with already. My littlest dd, age 5, is still on the first lesson because she's not totally set with the numbers 6-9. That is ok, though. She is improving already. I just wanted to report, since I see that folks have been looking at this thread. Maybe someone will get interested enough to have a dialog with me Blessings! | Sharron, I do not do home school (I do not have children), but I am a teacher. I applaud you on making sure your kids learn the basics at their own pace before moving on to more complex concepts. I think that one of our nation's problems in public education is that we expect all children to move and excel at the same pace and rate (No Child Left Behind!!!). That's just simply not possible. Each child is an individual and needs to be given the space and time to get things in their own time. I'm glad tht you've recognized that and are implementing it in your children's educational process. Keep us posted on your children's progress. | Beth, Thanks for responding! What you say is a factor in why I home school, for sure! fyi, my best friend is an educator and she worked in an ESL program last year that used this curriculum in their public school very successfully. She got really excited when she heard that I was going to be using it with the kids. Thanks for the encouragement! Blessings!
