I was waching the local news last night and they said "Manufacturers are making it easy to get low carb products. Stay tuned to find out where to get them"

I stayed tuned and they said several companies like Best Foods, Lipton, and Lawry, have teamed up to create Carb Options
It has lots of products and can be found Nationwide in your local grocery chains.

I will be on the lookout.

On the heels of this, I just got a newsletter from Safeway featuring low carb recipes. One recipe had honey in it, but it was still only 4 grams per serving. Not that I'm condoning honey, but at least they are trying!

I say good for them. I hope this summit that Andrea's at will help them to be better informed.

Blessings!

Wonder how the marinades and sauces taste...Of course, tons of sugar alcohols in the bars More people who don't know better will thing "LC doesn't work" because of this!

That's what I thought Tara. Someone who is doing this woe for a while can pick out the better quality products, but someone just starting this, will do just like the lowfat woe did and get fatter and fatter on all the products supposedly good for you!

Oh, I didn't see the "bars" -- I was looking at the sauces, etc.

Sorry, been up since 3

Nothing looked too terribly exciting, but its nice to know there are other options. The good news is that hopefully a little LC competition will reduce prices overall.
I, too, worry though about people trying to go about this in the same way as the low fat craze. Once I figured out that the LC bars weren't doing me any favors, the only "low carb" processed food I buy is the Atkins ketchup and Splenda, and I'm doing much better.
Oh well, on a good note, here is a link to the recipes they put on the site, they look good, and most can be modified with things you already have!

OK, I woke up grumpy this morning, so bear with me:

I've gotta say, I think it's great that there are new options available for lc'ers and that big manufacturers are taking us seriously, for whatever reason.

BUT.

Remember when low fat was The Thing, and everybody ran out and bought Snackwells and fat free cheese and low fat this and that? And they thought that if they ate a box of fat free cookies they would get thin and healthy? And they were wrong?

Same here.

These lc products, IMHO, can be dangerous if you don't educate yourself. Not only can they be viewed as a free ticket to eat more, but you've got to know just what are in them. These big manufacturers are going to make them as cheaply as possible; i.e: additives and sugar alcohols and chemicals.
If someone got heavy and unhealthy eating cruddy convenience food, switching to different crud, whether lowfat or lc, is not going to get them healthy. And I just don't trust these big companies to put our health first. They saw a viable market sector and jumped on it.
What I'm trying to say here is we owe it to ourselves to be careful with this stuff. What I'm not saying is that it is necessarily all bad. We just need to be educated consumers, and read those labels.

Thank you. I feel better.

I bought the peanut butter, steak sauce and BBQ sauce. The PB is delicious. It is Skippy (3 g)and made with Splenda. I do not like the natural tasting PB so this was worth the extra money to me. The BBQ sauce has 1 gram and it is not great tasting, but it is fast. I have not tried the steak sauce yet. I cannot afford to buy steaks.

They also had salad dressing, ice tea mix and a cheese sauce. These products are all brand name. I found them at Kroger.

Thanks Jen, for the link,

I didn't wake up grumpy today, it was your turn Trina! But, what ChefTrina stated here is absolutely, 100% correct.

We, as LCers, need to undo years of bad eating habits. As someone who is working through this each day, I feel we should start with the basics of the LC WOE/L, and build on each success we have with overcoming.

There is a time and place for LC replacements, I use them...with care and caution. My advice would be to use ONE item, monitor how you feel, cravings, do you feel spaced out, etc. Then you'll know if your body if going to tolerate that particular product.

Keep in mind, just because it's LC, doesn't mean it's prepared with our overall health in mind. Read not only the nutrition label, but the ingredients as well. Educate yourself on ingredients, how they impact your body.

Take care~

I found these at Target on Friday - I think I read the ingredients on the PB and put it right back - but I DID buy a jar of the Alfredo sauce which didn't list hydrogenated anything or sugars - so I'll try it and report back.

I agree, we HAVE to be informed consumers, and refuse to buy stuff that is full of CRAP. Every now and then I get so excited by something that I forget to thoroughly inspect the label until I get home, only to find it has one thing or another that I do not care to put into my body - so back to the store it goes!

It IS nice to have a few "convenience foods" in the cupboard for those "nothing to eat!" nights though.

It is important to look at serving sizes. I have a few lc foods but I know that I can't over indulge.

I just looked at their website, and noticed that the penut butter has trans fats in it. I will stick with the natural version. The barbecue and cheese sauces looked like they had potential though.

Michael Angelos pepperoni pasta sauce had half the carbs that the Carb Options marinara sauce. The only negative for Michael Angelos was the nitrates. It was very good though.

Yeah, Jen, I found Carb Options Ranch salad dressing, with a Wishbone label on it, at Kroger for $3.69 per bottle.

That's a little steep for me, even if it does tout zero carbs.

I'll stick with my Ranch dressing from Save A Lot for $.99 cents per bottle, at 2 carbs per tablespoon.

This site is one of the best resources available for people following any sort of low car plan. The support offered is amazing.

I started this WOE on August 1st and have lost somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 pounds. I
read the book and it all just came together. This WOE makes perfect sense.

I have been concerned about the number of low carb products bombarding the marketplace lately. Many of these really seem to go against everything that the books are trying to teach us. I have tried several of the products (too many!) and know that I must keep most of these new products at arms length.

I live in a city with several low carb stores. It seems like a new one opens each month. As I
walk the aisles I notice that people are filling their baskets with cheesecakes, brownies, candies and cookies. I understand the desire to have foods that are comfortable and quick, but I know that I will soon be hearing all of the stories of people that failed at low carb eating even though
they never strayed off of the plan. It will be just as it was with low fat snacks. People were
eating boxes of Snackwell cookies and wondering why the scale wouldn’t budge.

I know that I must stay true to the spirit of this WOE. I have not felt this good in years. The lowcarb brownies, cheesecakes and ice cream are tasty, but not worth it. The is a distance race, not asprint. I have to stop looking for shortcuts. The low carb products are not for me. Let the buyer beware.
