I was priveleged to spend time in the home of a woman who just turned 100 on Feb. 02. Her party was in Kingsland, Ga. last Saturday where over 200 people showed up. She told me that she had always believed that if she took care of her body, God would take care of the rest. She told me about "foreign" things being in all that "boxed up food till it just smothers out all the good workings in your body" She admonished all to stay away from the junk. Is she low carb? No, she just won't eat foods that aren't naturaly grown. She's very active, does housework and hand tills the garden and recited a poem that was as long as Longfellows "Lady of Challot", but hers was a humerous tale that chroniclized a couples relationship from spooning to marriage to his chasing skirts and her taking over his wallet and bopping him on the head periodically to keep him in line and when she was through she smiled a moment and told another tale that left us in stitches! I interviewed her for a few minutes and I asked her what it was like as a black woman living in the south just after the turn of the century. My next question was about her relationships with white people and racism. Her reply was " I believe in God, I believe there's a heaven an a hell, somes gonna burn so sad fa-eva and what be the use of me burnin myself all these years so I close my eyes an keep on burnin? They ain't never gonna burn up, they just keep burnin and ain't no use makin myself burn all these years." She used to play baseball and loves basketball and football. A clip of her party will be on this month in Florida, but on cable and we have satellite as does she. What a hoot she is and I'm thankful that I've been invited back.
