| Last night we took my soon-to-be 8 year-old son out to his favorite Chinese restaurant to do an early brithday celebration because Grandpa has to go to the South for the next month or so. Before we even got there, we had this big discussion about what the name of the restaurant was. You see, I'd forgotten it! I thought it was the Golden Dragon. Grandpa said that it had to be a good restaurant since it had the word "dragon" in it -- everyone knows that all the really good Chinese restaurants have either the word "dragon" or "garden" in them! Well, it turned out that the name of the restaurant is the Great Wall. So much for the theory. Now he had to test all the food to see if he had to adjust his theory or if it held true... Meanwhile, my 11 year old daughter asked what in the world the Great Wall was for and who built it. Grandpa replied that it was built by Ghengis Kahn to keep out the Mongolian Hoardes. (I have no idea if this is correct or not, but it is really irrelevent given the way the rest of the conversation went!) So then, my daughter asked what Horned Gourds were doing with Mongrels??? Then we proceeded to have this very funny conversation about funny little dogs and deformed squashes... Fast forward a bit into the dinner. Daughter asks Grandpa if this is going to mess with his theory of it being a good restaurant even though it doesn't have "dragon" or "garden" in the name. He said that it definitely had! So, then of course we all set about deciding if it was the word "great" or the word "wall" that was important... We came up with a few names: The Great Garden Wall The Wall of the Great Dragon The Garden of the Great Dragon Wall! Then, Somehow or another monkeys got brought into teh conversation. DH had many monkeys as a child, (he grew up in the jungles of Ecuador), and my son wanted to know how much they cost. dh said, "a monkey cost about 50 sucres." The kids all looked at him strangely and asked what a sucre was. He then explained that 50 sucres was about $2. So, of course my daughter really went off on that. She thought he meant that each sucre was worth $2! We spent a considerable amount of time trying to explain it to her, when finally, dh said that 25 sucres was about the same as $1. She had a moment and sat back, satisfied that she understood. Then my son, sat full upright onto his knees, as tall as he could get in his chair without actually standing on it and blurted out: "You had to sell 50 suitcases to buy a monkey???" ![]() and how does the title of this fit in with anything at all??? On the way home we passed another restaurant. It is known for its "dinner and live entertainment" theme. I told everyone that I had once looked at one of thier menus and just a plate of pasta, the cheapest food in the world, was like $18!!! And any other food they had was just plain weird and hoity toity!! My daughter asked, "well, what do you mean weird, what is 'hoity-toity?'" Trying to "fluff" it, I replied, "Oh, you know, like Roasted Rosemary Giblets with Braised Turkey Nostrils. Stuff like that!" Hoping that what I said would sound so wierd and impressive that they wouldn't notice WHAT it actually was that I was saying. Nope. Didn't work. They picked up on it like an I-don't-know-what! Teased me no end, they did! And here I am, sharing it with y'all. I must be daft Blessings!
