Hey everyone!
In OOOOklahoma, sometimes it's hard to determine just when spring is arriving...LOL...we've had some BIG snowfalls and ice storms in March and even freezing temps into April that zaps our fruit trees
Well, yesterday, I spotted 2 Purple Martins circling the pole where the martin house belongs(we have a removable house that DH stores in the shed in winter). THE MARTINS ARE HERE!!!...just a pretty sure sign Spring is almost here!!! Also, the Robins arrived a few weeks ago, the doves are "cooing and courting" and the House Finche and Cardinals have been singing their little hearts out...Spring must be near!!<insert crossed fingers here> Soooooooo.....any other ways to determine if Spring is at your house?
BRING ON THE FLOWERS!!!

Shelley, how beautiful! I love anything in the hibiscus family and those look like doubles.

How do I know that winter is loosening it's icy grip? MUDDY PAWPRINTS!

As the snow and ice cover is starting to shrink back a bit, every bit of the world thus revealed is nuthin but mud. Having four four-footed housemates with ad-lib access to the great outdoors, that's sixteen little mud stampers for each trip in and out. Yesterday morning was downright comical! The whole house was covered in different sized, perfectly stamped, prints - all leading in different directions.

I've taken out my "spring mop" - an old string mop that I keep near the pet door to try to keep it under some kind of control. It's fairly futile, but it gives me something to do while waiting for mud season to be over.

Maggie,
ROFL...I remember those muddy, well, red clay colored, paw prints when we had our border collie!! Actually, I "wore" his paw prints on me a few times...he just loved to jump up and give me a kiss when I would get home from work Ahhhhh.....the love of a pet...sweet!

Count me in with 4 little paw-print stampers, too. I have a Swiffer WetJet that I *love* for this! It's not a mop I would want to use for the down and dirty, need a scrub brush in the corners, type of mopping (like I do a lot of that anyway, ha ha!) but it's just perfect for quick touch-ups like muddy paw prints. It also picks up pet hair really well.

I've noticed that the birds are starting to sing their "territory songs" to start laying claim to the best nesting spots.

Here in coastal CA, where snow is unknown and ice is for martinis, spring is heralded by the birdies singing their mating songs! Also noted that Mr. and Mrs. Jay (aka Algernon and Sweetie) were busy picking stuff out of the door mat the other day - a sure sign they are in the process of nest building.

I've been making "bird blocks" the last couple months, with melted suet or bacon fat, peanut butter, seeds of various types, leftover high carb cereals - which I then mix all together and pour into loaf pans. When cooled and solidified, we put out a block for the birdies.

The past couple of weeks has shown a dramatic increase in the numbers/varieties of birds showing up, including a beautiful phoebe, Townsend's warblers, fox, golden-crowned and white-crowned sparrows, and our ever-present acorn woodpeckers, the aforementioned scrub jay pair, and our delightful little titmouse couple. We get so much fun out of the birds!

Our hyacinths bloomed last week and smell wonderful, and last weekend we planted two bareroot rose bushes surrounded by violas, and some cyclamen and primroses in the planter box by the front door.

Yep, it looks like spring alrighty!

It looks like an early Spring here in New England too. Today is a beautiful sunny day.
The pond outside our condo is melting. This is amazing considering that we were skating on it three weeks ago. There is actually open water!

I KNOW that we will have another storm or two before it really comes, but today is absolutely gorgeous!

I actually heard some birds singing this morning when I got to church. What a lovely surprise after so long without their songs.

Peace, Peg

It is so pretty outside. Its one of those day you just want to get out on lake and go fishing. This will be my first Spring here in Oklahoma. I hope it is as pretty here and it is in North Carolina.

Lez,

Are you able to have a garden where you live?

I've always loved those small English gardens with an amazing number of flowers per square inch.

The tulips and daffodils are poking well above the ground - and I saw a crocus blooming.

The mourning doves have started nesting here and I saw my first robin - a male in magnificent spring plumage.

Spring is popping up here in the Queen City of the Plains. My bulbs are poking through and my rose bushes are putting out leaves. All too early, really. I just know as soon as my spring bulbs bloom, we'll get one of our late spring snows and they'll all be smashed to the ground. Happens every year, darn it!

Lez, so far I've only been to England in late fall, I want to see an English spring in the worst way.

Well, it's hard to tell when Spring comes in Southern California, but one tell-tale sign is that it stops raining. Our rainy season is Jan-March, but so far, March is proving dry.
Yesterday it was 87 degrees!
I guess this means it's time for me to go to the nursery and get some veggie plants and seeds. If I start early enough in the year, I can ususally have 2 veggie gardens through the spring and summer.
