Question hair color query

I just permed my hair this week, then bought some hair color to apply at home. When I read the package instructions, it says that if you have permed your hair, to wait 14 days before applying the color!!! 14 days!?!? Is this really necessary?? Are there any hair experts out there who can tell me if it is safe to apply color within 3 days of perming my hair???
tia!!

I'm not an expert, but I have some experience and I have to say: It depends.

If the color contains a developer you might want to wait the 14 days with some serious conditioning along the way. Both permanent waving lotion and color developer break down the cuticle of the hair shaft. Laying a damage trip on the structure of the hair shaft too often (depending on the strength of the hair you started with) can result in breakage. That's why they tell you to give it a little rest between "attacks." LOL!

On the other hand if you're using a "deposit only" or "filler" type of coloring, you problably won't hurt it.

HTH.

oh. I purchased a "regular" hair color product, with a developer. I guess I should have bought this a while ago, and read the directions then! I was hoping to perm and apply the color over the weekend, before going back to work on Monday.
I may still give it a try,and just hope for the best. My hair was in good condition, so maybe it will be ok. Hmmmmmmmmmm.......... do I dare? I will wait til I have some more coffee to decide!
thanks, Maggie!

well, it is almost dinner time here, and I still have not decided! I really want to do it today, but I reaize it will probably seriously damage my hair...................on the other hand, the salon was going to apply color at the time of the perm ( I am just too cheap to have them do it again) so if it was really bad, they wouldn't do it, right?
Oh, I am SUCH a coward, and sooooooo indecisive! LOL, I KNOW that it is just HAIR, so why is this so hard? *laughing at self*

Cynthia - think of it this way: TIME

If you play it safe, you life with unpermed hair for 2 weeks.

If go ahead and your hair is damaged, you will have thin, brittle hair for at least 4 to 6 months - and, if it's really badly damaged, you'd probably have to crop it off and live with very short hair for a year.

My 2 cents is to be patient and wait -

I've been a stylist since 1988. I don't know a single stylist that would color and perm in the same day. Yikes!!!!!!!!! Though I don't doubt some will.Reason being the if you perm then color the conditioner in the color will relax the perm. If you color first the perm strips the color.
We do all checmical services at least 7 days apart. Good luck!

I'm curious, how did you make out anyway?, (and if it hasn't fallen out yet it most likely wont...maybe, just kidding) and the one nice thing about hair is, It WILL grow back.

Well. it is Okay.....
It wasn't the best perm I have ever had, I think it was this gals first long-hair spiral perm! She tried.
The curls were just not as "tight" as previous perms I have had. (all have been with my hair very long, almost to my waist)
Since it wasn't super-curly anyway, I went ahead with the color application. Can't really tell if that affected the curl or not, if so, it wasn't much.
Hair seems fine! Just a tiny bit dry, and I am using Pantene After Color Care on it. Seems to be holding up okay.
So, I wonder how long I should wait before re-perming!? I was thinkin' maybe December............

Good for you!!!! Spiral perms are a real pain in the butt to get right, personally I hate to wrap them but I LOVE the way they come out, so they are worth the effort in the end. Just make sure when you retouch the color you only put it on the ROOTS, so's ya don't masacre your already treated hair!!!
Have a good one!!

Thanks, Jackie! Any thoughts on how long I should wait to re-perm? I was thinking maybe .......December? It is not as "tight" as I would like, but is ok for now. In the past, I always waited at least a year and a half before perming again, but the perm was MUCH curlier and tight to begin with. Is 5-6 months too soon, do ya think?
I definately am only re-touching the roots, I am guessing I will need it in about 8 - 12 weeks.

The best advice I can give you is to use your noggin and play it by ear, if your hair is in good shape and NOT curly by December I'd say go ahead!! If its all dry and nasty cut it all off and start over (just joking, I have a kind of warped sense of humor), you WILL be able to tell. Oh yeah make SURE to tell the stylist you have color treated hair, it SHOULD be ovious to her but....I've seen some real botch jobs.
