    Default Dirty Martini???

Hello - I have a confession to make. I'm having a martini or two tonight. I'm on induction so this may not be allowed. But I'm doing it anyway. I don't drink during the week but do like to indulge on the weekends. And being a Seattle Native...This weekend is HUGE for the Seahawks! I have to have a little to drink to calm my nerves...ROFL!!! Really, that's not true. I just wanted one, and I'm having one. I know the vodka (while not healthy - is carb free) however, I have a bit of olive juice added in. So I will count carbs. Any comments on this ritual? I'm not sure I'm willing to give up my occasional red wine or martini just yet but am willing to listen if people have advice to give.
Thanks and have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Kim - I noticed you were in Idaho. We drive through the panhandle about once a year to visit my husbands father out in Montana. I peaked at your website and you live in a lovely location. I love all the snow and your little boy is just darling. Anyway...I really hope the Seahawks don't choke. They have done so well this season...is it too much to ask that they get to the SuperBowl?? We've always entertained moving somewhere like Montana or Idaho. I've lived in Seattle (well Bothell) all my life and love Washington state but its SO expensive here. It would be nice to live in the country somewhere. My whole family lives here and I'm very close to them so I think that's what makes me stay. Plus I have a good job with great benefits which is another reason I don't entertain moving. But if I did..Idaho & Montana are places I would consider. Have a great weekend. Go Hawks!

I just realized a few minutes ago that he was your grandson, he is beautiful- a very handsome boy. I am so impressed!!! You look so young!!! Really - I don't mean to be weird but damn you look awesome!!! I can only hope to regain some of my youthfew appearance. I'm 37 and look much MUCH older than you!!! Regarding the Seahawks - I won't say choke (my husband would put me in the crawlspace under the house if I said it outloud! )

Well, since Kim came in here and hijacked your thread, AND told you how old she is (like we didn't already know that she was old), I will give you my advice on the martini. (Love ya Kim!)

I'm trying to do Induction to the book so I'm not drinking right now, but I personally LOVE dirty vodka martinis. Give me a dirty Skyy or Grey Goose martini and I'm a happy guy! When I did Atkins before I discovered that I could drink them without adding anything major to my carb count. Obviously, the vodka has no carbs, and I don't believe the olive juice and the olives for garnish really have enough to worry about, unless you're going to have several, as I did on New Year's Eve (but that's another story). The only thing to remember is that your body will burn the alcohol for fuel before it will burn fat, so it may temporarily stall your weight loss. It won't be a permanent stall - once again, it just depends on how much you drink. If you have one or two I doubt you'll even see a difference - I never did. So I would say enjoy in moderation! Red wine is my other vice as well, and it's the same story, except the wine itself does have some carbs. So once again, in moderation. Plus the health benefits of red wine might balance out the carbs, so think of it as a health tonic

Seahawks?? Is that a sports team or something?

All right Kim - you may hijack again. Sheesh!

actually, low carbing makes you MUCH more sensitive to alcohol, so that's something you need to watch out for. and i would also encourage you to be very judicious in your drinking during the weight-loss phase of atkins. if you're drinking every weekend (or more frequently), it may possibly keep you from losing any weight at all. i guess what i'm trying to say is, the less often, the better as far as losses are concerned. if you find you are not losing weight at the rate you would like, that's a great place to start looking.

    good luck.

FYI, i am following the south beach diet - and, like atkins, alcohol is not allowed the first two weeks. i stuck to that rule .... but after that i went back to my red wine. i LOVE it. i drink a couple glasses about 3-4 nites a week (w/ dinner or out w/ friends on the weekends) - and it has not hindered my weight loss at all. (well, if i had abstained - perhaps i would have lost it more quickly?? but who knows.)
again, YMMV .... but i think it's all about balance and moderation. just my two cents.

Thanks everyone for the input....I will watch it closely and see what happens. If I have to cut it out, I will! :( I do love wine though and I found a red wine with lowcarb content (haven't tried it yet). I'm sure you're all right that it would be better to do without for a while, but to be honest...I don't know if I'm that strong. I went 9 months without (and then some) because of my pregnancy etc. I guess its just mind over matter and if I really wanted to I'd give it up for now. I have more than a few vices...overeating being one. So I'll tackle this mountain a bit at a time and see how things go.
