| I would be 160.0 one day, 160.5 another, then back to 160.0. Yesterday I was 160.8. Today I got on the scale and I weighed 161. Boy am I bummed out. I didn't start low carbing to lose weight, but I really thought I would lose weight. I started low carbing to control my BS and am doing really well with that. I have not lost very much weight and I have not lost very fast. I have read in the Atkins books to expect huge weight losses in a short amount of time. I have only lost 8 pounds in three months. I have lost some inches too. Mostly in my booby area, (where I really didn't want to lose). I have gone down 2 bra sizes!!! (sob). Now my upper belly, above my "waist" sticks out farther than my boobs!!! I have lost about 3 inches on my waist and 4 on my hips. I am happy about that, but am not happy with my deflated boobs!! What is really bummy, is I have been exercising more. I actually walked twice yesterday and did Tai chi too. I am not cheating. But, at first I was avoiding any processed foods. But since Atkins seems to not be afraid of sugar free jello, pudding and drink mixes, I thought I would add some just for variety. Yesterday I ate sugar free jello. My first taste of a sweet thing in 3 months. I am trying to take this in stride and be humorous about it, but I really am bummed out!! randysgrandma |

| Weight loss is a very individual thing, as you can see by reading different folks experiences. Certainly, there are many examples in DANDR of folks with dramatic losses, but there are also examples of those so metabolically impaired, that weight loss goes slowly. Like you, I was overweight when I started but was most concerned with normalizing my BGL's. The blood sugars came into line very quickly, but my weight took about two years to normalize. Some of us are "turtles" in that department. ... and, yes, the weight loss is seldom uniform from head to toe. The nice thing about a slow loss is that it gives you lots of time to build new habits.

| hi Sandra, ditto what Maggie said. But I'd like to add, if you have lost that many inches in 3 months, then your body is doing *more* in the weight loss area than you think. (For some folks, the tape measure tells the tale, rather than the scales) That's TERRIFIC!!!! Yay, you!!! 1 pound can simply be due to a shift in body fluids and/or "solids". This might be a good time for you to limit your encounters with the scale....yanno??....maybe weigh only once a week, or once every 2 weeks. Please do not despair. I think you are doing GGGGREAT!! Keep on keepin' on! s

| i've also found that inches and pounds invariably come off at different times for me. as long as there are signs of progress, at whatever rate, then you're probably doing a lot of things right. if the scale trips upset you, visit it less often. problem solved.

| Many of us who are a bit older and have metabolic problems lose slower than others who don't have metabolic problems. You're doing great, keep doing what you are doing. Sometimes we lose fat where we don't measure too and the scale doesn't chage either but you might notice your clothes fitting looser.

| Just wanted to update you all. I continued to gain, until I had gained back 3 of the eight pounds I had lost. In spite of that, I was not giving up. I started low carb to control my diabetes. If I lost weight that would be a plus, but was not the goal. After a few days of holding at 163, the weight slowly started coming off again. This morning I was back down to 160. I suspect that I had probably started taking in more calories than I had been before. I was also eating lots of tomatoes. It was peak tomato season here, and I just love fresh tomatoes. Hate store bought tomatoes. I didn't realise until I read it on Dr. Bernstein's site, but he considers tomatoes to be a fruit and to be just as harmful to diabetics as any other fruit. Tomato season is over now, so I haven't had tomatoes in a couple of weeks. I probably won't have another one until late summer next year. I had also started having some sugar free jello. I was buying the mix it yourself kind because it is much cheaper than the ready to eat kind. I found out (also for Bernstein's site) that the ready to eat kind doesn't have malto-dextrine in it. The mix it yourself kind does. I have switched to the ready to eat kind. Today my husband and I went to store. He picked up some Dole brand ready to eat geletin. I read the ingredients and saw that it has fruit juice in it. The Jello brand doesn't. But the Dole brand is only 5 calories, where the Jello brand has 10 calories. Don't know what to do about that! Most likely I will avoid the fruit juice and eat the extra 5 calories. randysgrandma |

| I love tomatoes, too. But I limit myself to a very small amount per serving per day when they're in season. I can also handle an occasional 1/2 ear of corn ... also, only when in season locally. Tomatoes actually ARE fruits, although we tend to think of them as vegetables in this country. Probably the "safest" fruit - carb wise - is the avocado. I added a link to a very inexpensive and delicious home made jello in your other thread.

| Here is a website that explains the sudden, sometimes over night weight gains that low carbers sometimes experience What They Don't Tell You About Low Carb Diets It is a website with lots of information about low carb dieting. It is not against low carb dieting, in fact, it is very much for it. It just has a lot of info about low carbing. Sandra |

| This morning I weighed in at 158. The lowest I have been in about 27 years. I am not sure it is permanent, may go up, may go down. But I have learned not to freak out. What is important it that since following low carb. I feel better, my bs is in control, my triglycerides are normal. All my blood work was normal except for some elevated LDL. Which I tried to tell my doctor is not a bad sign, but a good sign. She agreed to not do anything about that for the time being, and told me to keep doing what I am doing. She couldn't go so far as to say I was doing the right thing, she warned me about kidney and heart problems. I gave her a copy of the article saying the ADA is finally aproving a low carb diet. It is a shame we have to educate our doctors! Sandra |

| RandysGrandma, That sounds like a neat scale! If I were you, I'd take a sledgehammer to it today. You are totally freaking yourself out weighing daily, and trying to adjust your eating to fit its fluctuations. Send it home with a family member or neighbor, and make them promise to only allow you to use it once every two weeks. Then, do that in a controlled manner (for instance, I used to weigh only on Saturday mornings, after the bathroom, before breakfast or drinking anything, same clothes.) Finally chart your progress on a graph. And even though you'll occasionally see a fluctuation, you'll see a general trend if you are eating right. Only adjust your eating program monthly, if necessary, and stick with what works. This is a lifelong thing, not a race. You'll never be happy making it a race because your speedometer (the scale) will always be haywire.
