I noticed when I started LC last Sept. that whenever I was out with friends, as soon as I would try to find something I could order that would be low carb, that the whole lunch would be about low carb. People would want o know all about it and it would seriously shape the conversation of the whole lunch.

At Thanksgiving, I was cooking for the whole family and I decided that I would try NOT to make the conversation be about MY diet. So, I just quietly ate lots of meat and vegetables...and nothing else. Then I ate my special LC pumpkin bake. And it was a really good thing for me. Almost like I was actually making the "diet" a part of everyday life and the diet was no longer controlling me. So, I've been trying to do that ever since. It has been a real victory if I could get through a lunch with friends and they didn't notice I'm eating LC. Seriously, people didn't even notice that I was eating the tops off the pizza and leaving the crust!

So, anyway, I've learned the power of the word "Don't." I can say, "I CAN'T eat bread," and it's immediately all about my diet. Poor me. I can't eat bread. But if I say, "I DON'T eat bread," it become MY choice. So, I'm in control, not the diet. I like that feeling. If you are a control freak like me, one of the hardest things about gaining weight is that sense of a loss of control. I hated that. It was like food had control of me.

So, give it a try. Use "don't" instead of "can't." It's a small thing, but it feels good. Really!

Words can certainly help shape attitudes.

You are so right. It comes down to a matter of choice. It is not that you can't eat something.....because in all actuality.....you can eat it.....if you choose to.

Hi. I've been away for a while and this is the first post I read when I back. Cisco, you are so right. I get so weary of explaining my way of eating to people. From now on I will use the word don't instead of can't. Thanks for the suggestion.

Attitude makes all the difference, in success or failure. Thank you for sharing that.
