well....
a month on Atkins isn't really long enough to get the benefits with lab work reflecting those benefits.
Dr A himself said labs might get worse before they drastically improve; and I believe he recommended having labs re-checked at about the 12 week mark.
I wouldn't really pay much attention to what *the friend* said, but what did your physician say?
I'd ask to have my labs rechecked after being on Atkins for 12 weeks or so. I bet you AND your Dr will be pleasantly surprised. JMHO.

good luck!

You might also find it helpful to get the Gary Taubes book "Good Calories, Bad Calories." The book is very well documented and may give you a lot of information to bring to a discussion with your friend and your physician.

Sandi,
I'm with Maggi and ShellyG. I wouldn't take any drastic action till at least another 12 weeks has passed. You have no baseline data, because you hadn't had bloodwork in so long. Some of my best friends have sabotaged me in the past because of prejudice against Atkins, or even a conventional diet like Weight Watchers. Sometimes their intentions are indeed good, but their knowledge is faulty. You have had more success already than you have had in years. No one I have ever talked to in the medical profession would disagree that losing weight would have a significant effect on blood sugar, etc.
I would also suggest you wait a while before switching doctors. Personally, I would be glad to have a doctor who didn't instantly prescribe blood sugar or ESPECIALLY cholestorol meds while you are making an effort to control your weight and eating patterns.
Cholestrol medicine is fairly controversial as it is, and it is expensive to boot!

I would ask myself the following questions:
1. Can I talk with this doctor? Do I get respect and serious anwers to my questions, or does he/she tend to minimize the importance of my concerns.
2. Does my doctor have a positive attitude towards Fibromyalgia patients or is he/she still laboring under antiquated prejudices?
3. How does my doctor support my efforts to use Atkins or other low carb diets to lose weight? Is he/she informed? Is he/she positive? Does he/she respect the tremendous effort you have already made to improve my own health and be in charge of my own body and wellness
4. How do I feel after speaking with , being examined by my doctor?
I know some doctors hate it when we bring background information because they think we're using people magazine articles , internet stuff and nutcase books to usurp their role-- that is one of the warning signs for me though, I expect a doctor to listen and address the issues I have and to consider different opinions, or I will not return to the office.

Look on this site for books and articles about nutrition and health relative to lowcarb eating and GO ARMED. I am sure you will be healthier as you continue to lose weight.
Also, ask dr. to look at balance of your good chol/bad cholestrol. I still get confused, so I always ask them to go through the results one by one.

PS. Most doctors are sadly undertrained in nutrition and its roll in health, as well as weight loss. Knowing some of the views of the ADA, I guess that might not be too bad, but lots of them just pass out the standard lofat, 1000-1200 calorie diet without even thinking. If you have a doctor who is willing to work with you I would keep her!

I am happy my Dr. didnt order any meds. I know the diet is new, and the last time I was on Atkins my chol. was 200. It was just how this lady reacted and came shooting at me one thing after another. But I do think she is a bit jealous as she is close to 500 pounds and finds every excuse why any diet doesnt work. She is depending on WLS to be her answer.
But with every thing going on in my life now, I surely didnt need her stuff at me

thanks everyone for the encouragment

I'm thinking Weight Loss Surgery. Is that it?

And if it is, Sandi, your friend is dead wrong if she thinks that's an "easy" way to lose weight. The diet modifications are extreme and require enormous commitment. And (from what I've read) the results are moderate, and often not long-lasting. Of all the weight-loss schemes we've all known about--and tried--over the years, that has to be the most oversold. You never read the stories from the Deeply Disappointed, only from the Results Not Typical.

Yes weight loss surgery, the friend is thinking that will solve all her problems, but I dont think so, all she talks about is food and she thinks that and eating organic is the answer to it, but she is 460 and gaining, But yet she puts me down all the time.
Yes I think she will lose weigh with it, and I know she will gain it back, sad

I guess the thing to remember here is that your friend, however possibly well-intentioned, may have a vested, emotional interest in you _not_ doing well with Atkins because of her current situation.

i hope the path she chooses works out for her. but for you, i do think it's a wise choice to put more credence in your doctor's advice than the friend's.
