    Default Why do people .......

I have lost 31 pounds sense August of this year!
    I am thrilled.
I have a online friend and she is planning to have a weight loss surgery.
Ok that is her right, I have no problem with that. SHe has to lose 10% of her weight to have it. So she was telling me that she is following their diet at the center and at 8 weeks of eating 1/2 cup of the 4 food groups and a big salad at each meal, she lost 11 pounds. She said if she keeps it up at this rate she will be thin for the surgery. I said maybe you wont need it. She said am I stupid of couse she will need it.
I think she is looking for a way to eat all she wants and still loose weight or stay thin.
She said she lost more then I did in 8 weeks, eating a healthier diet.

(she didnt talk about her uncontroled blood sugar and her tremors from low blood sugar and all the meds she is on now)

I dont know, why she is like this lol
and it annoys me no end

I understand what you are saying. She thinks she needs the bypass surgery as a crutch. I have heard of people really getting sick after that kind of surgery. The bypass surgery that they glamourize on Discovery Health and TLC only show the successes not the failures. I think that should be someones last choice

I have an online friend also who has just had this surgery too. It doesn't make any sense to me.......she had to be on a liquid diet 3 weeks before her surgery......then afterwards she couldn't eat any solid food again for a certain period. Of course, she lost 44 pounds so far, but that would be expected even without the surgery wouldn't you think? I am not against the surgery, it just seems so drastic and what happens later? Do these people gain the weight back again? Or does it effect their health as they get older? Low carb just seems so easy compared to that.

I had a client who was trying to GAIN 30 lbs so she would be eligible for the surgery. It's heart breaking, isn't it?

And once the surgery is over, it's recommended that you eat a special diet the rest of your life any way. Many of the patients end up needing support groups afterwards.

I'm a hypnotherapist and massage therapist. I recently read about a new hypnosis technique that's currently being used in Europe. People are hypnotized to believe they've had the surgery and are convinced they feel more satisfied with smaller portions of food. Believe it or not, it seems to be working for many people.

you know I respect her right to lose the weight the way she feels she has to, but she is preaching to me NOW that atkins is dangerous and i am not getting the healthy grains and stuff from fruit and stuff, I said I eat veggie and at some point fruit and she says till you get to that point, you are not getting the right vitiamins and the place she goes to says 1/2 cup of protein , fruit, starch and veggies, and bread something like that, so this is the diet she has been looking for, eat what she wants and thinks she will lose weight. But dont put me down for something that is working for me, I dont feel less unhealthy and my Dr. said Atkins is good and approves, I wouldnt expect a WLS place to say Atkins was good, Would you?

I see your point, very well, but you should know that not everyone uses weightloss surgury as a cruch, some people do tho. 3 out of 5 people in my family have had gastricby pass, and that just immidiate family. And two of them, it was life or death. But, one of them didn't really need it, but due to a car wreak, it was the only option. But saying things like "cruch" or "easy way out" is really hurtful for some people, and it really isn't easy, its a complete life style change.

I didn't read your last post until after I posted that comment. Your friend is very hypocritical for saying that Aktins ins't healthy, WLS isn't either if you really think about it. She will have to take multiple vitamins for the REST OF HER LIFE to get the proper nutrition. And congrats on the 30 pounds by the way, that awesome!!

You're right to be concerned. The people I've seen go through surgical methods always seem "shocked" at the side effects when there's entire forums dedicated to the topic. Seems like everyone's focused on the silver lining and easy way out.

Hopefully she will see the weight loss from the diet and just stick with that!?

When people criticize me for the way we eat, I invite them to go away and do some reading, educate themselves and then come back for a debate. I refer them to Gary Taubes, Malcolm Kendrick, Jared Diamond, Dr. Jay Wortman etc.and their books/lectures/websites. I also point out that following conventional (big agri-food/pharma sponsored) nutritional advice left me 30 pounds heavier, depressed, lethargic, bloated, continually exhausted and medicated for hypertension, bad cholesterol and diabetes. I was facing going on needles for my uncontrollable diabetes in a few months. I followed that crap hard core. I made our own bread so I could cram in even more whole grains, had 2 meat free days a week, ate everything low fat etc. I did it all and then some. I realized it wasn't working and so started digging on my own and changed our diets completely. I can't begin to tell people how much our physical and emotional health and energy have improved with our dietary changes. We don't feel deprived or hungry EVER. Both my husband and I are in our 50s and medication free. My husband is at a great weight and I'm sloooowly getting there. Our family doctor is amazed every time we go for our checkups. The improvement in my health has made it possible for me to keep up with caring for my mother as she died of cancer, an ill father and a bipolar daughter all at the same time. Ten years ago any one of those would have been beyond my physical and emotional abilities. The proof is, as they say, is in the (low carb) pudding. So there.
