Default Hi, I'm new here!

Hello
I've spent the better part of the morning lurking and collecting recipes and ideas, so I guess I need to introduce myself now.
Where do I begin? I'm a Type2 Diabetic, very overweight, and am finally beginning to get a grip on my life again. Started on Byetta injections in March, after basically living with my head in the sand , never testing my blood sugar, eating everything in sight, including tons of sweets....I guess you can call it denial. So when I finally decided to see my Dr. again, my blood work results scared the living ((())) out of me, and I realized it was time to quit screwing around.
My starting weight on March 11th was 350lbs (I'm 5'6"), and as of today I'm 328. Still have a looooong way to go, but my blood sugars have already come down from the 300s to 100s-200s. Low carb eating is not new to me, I did the South Beach for a while, also Atkins. Right now I'm sort of doing my own thing. Staying away completely from sugar in any form, also white flour products. The bread I'm eating is a high fiber whole grain bread (German Black Bread...a taste of home!) I'm ordering from a German bakery in Canada. Thanks to the Byetta, which has an appetite suppressing effect, portion control is usually not a problem.
I'm learning to listen to when my body tells me I'm full. Also, I've decided, that watching my carbs is easier for me personally than counting calories to control my blood sugar. I would like to get more into low carb baking, still have a lot of the ingredients from my Atkins phase. I copied the One Minute Muffin recipe and plan to try it soon.
On a more personal level: I'm 52, married, live in NW Georgia with my husband Tony and my furbabies (4s and manys), I'm a nurse and work the night shift in a local nursing home, I have a 29 year old son David, and 3 grandbabies (Jasmine,7, Caleb,5, and Layla, 22months).
I was born in Germany and have been in the States since 1981. I noticed one of the members is located in Mannheim; my home town is Ludwigshafen which is right next door to it......small world!
Okay, that's all I can think of...it's weird to put your life into words, but it also helps you get a perspective on it....
I hope I haven't bored you all to tears will try to check back sometime this weekend (I'm working a 4 night stretch).
Can't wait to hear from y'all!

(HUGS)

Welcome, Gabrielle.

You may be interested in checking out Dr. Bernstein's stuff...he's particularly well-known for his work with diabetics. A lot of folks who deal with the BS issues also like Protien Power. And if you're a nurse who's managing diabetes, then I don't need to tell you to work directly with your doc about any change to your eating.

Good luck to you, and welcome to LCE.

Welcome, Gabrielle.

Most of us find it helpful to follow a specific plan, makes it a bit easier.

It's wonderful that you've lost so much so soon, and that the blood sugar levels are coming way down. Good for you!

We're never bored by life stories, it's how we get to know each other.

Many of us have started a journal. It's a great outlet for what we are feeling & thinking, a good place to ask questions, and you get many, many visitors, always with an encouraging word. I recommend it for any newbie.

Wishing you much success.

Welcome, Gabrielle.

My favorite German bread comes from Parry Sound in Ontario. I find I can have half a slice at a given meal per day and suffer no ill effects in maintenance phase.

Hope you'll make yourself at home here.

Hello Gabrielle and welcome to LCE!

I too am on an appetite suppressant and while it is not a "miracle pill" I have found that it "calms the demon" so to speak.

Congratulations on your fantastic losses so far!!! Nothing like some tangible success to keep you motivated!!! I really like your practical and honest approach to controlled carb eating. Very straight forward, it-is-what-it-is kind of thinking...very cool!!!!

Again welcome!
Kelly
