Kitty Newbie here

Hi, my name is Hilda, I am 58 and a type 2 diabetic. I was diagnosed last July and had done really well monitoring myself and walking everyday..I had lost 20 pounds and my Blood glucose levels were pretty good.My A1C was at 6 when i had it done in Oct..then the dreaded holidays hit along with cold weather and ice. I am back up by 15 pounds, not walking and yes the BG is up again. I am on Metformin 500 mg twice a day. I have been with a lot of different groups but none of them were just low carb and this is what I seem to need. I hated given up my bread, potatoes and pasta. I am hoping here I can find a new way to survive with this horrid disease. I also have "hypertrophic cardiomyopathy" so any exercise that gets the heart beat up is also out so walking a normal pace is my only exercise I am allowed. I really need a group that will have ideas of what to eat and I know we are all different but lately it seems everything i eat is causing my BG to rise. I really don't want to have to go the insulin route. thanks for listening..Hilda

Welcome, Hilda.

With your medical concerns, you'll definitely need to work closely with your doc tor whenver you're making changes to your eating plan, as I imagine you already know.

Are you on a specific plan? How long have you been watching your carbs? You mentioned laving the carby foods behind--usually that's only tough for a while...Once you learn your way around, most of us have found there are acceptable subs and changes we can make so we can enjoy what we eat and not feel deprived. And a support community like this one is a great way to learn how (although I'll admit I might be a wee bit biased).

I can tell you that our folks usually report good BS results from low carbing, so I personally think it's a great choice for managing diabetes. What does doc have to say about it?

Glad to have you with us.

Welcome, Hilda. It's good to see more people in the - er, um - more mature phase of life!

There are people right in this forum who have successfully controlled their type 2 diabetes with a low carb eating approach. It can only improve your health; however, Dixie is right, you have to work closely with your doctor.

I just saw a wonderful interview with Dr. Mary Vernon, an expert in controlling type 2 diabetes with a controlled carb approach. Here's the URL:

DiabetesNewsStand

There should be more interviews coming, soon. You might find Dr. Richard Bernstein's books helpful. You can read one of them right on the internet.

Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. A Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars. Official Web Site

And Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution, co-authored by Dr. Vernon and Jackie Eberstein, who worked with Dr. Atkins for 30 years.

There is a lot of good info out there for you. I hope some of this is of help to you.

Thank you for the welcome and I am just checking around about the low carb diets now actually. I had just cut way back on my carbs before as I had been on the Dr Atkins diet about 25 yrs ago and my goal was to just get the weight down quick for the diabetes. My Dr had suggested the Weight Watchers until I informed him of the carbs in their food..so he has agreed that I have a handle on what I am doing and this backslide is my own fault neither the meds or the Dr are to blame for my bad choices. I have made a big decision that if I want to continue a decent life I have got to make the changes permanently and I am hoping with this group I can get the help to do so..thanks Hilda

Welcome, Hilda.

There are many people (I'm one) who have found that they are able to control their BGL's with a very controlled carbohydrate diet.

Read all you can about the issue and then watch your own response to good choices.

Knowledge is power.
