| Welcome, MaryLee! As we tell all the newbies, research the various low carb plans, choose the one that appeals most to you, buy the book and read it cover to cover, take notes, underline, highlight, then prepare your menu and go shopping. You're going to find that there is a great deal of variety in low carb foods, and when you are equipped with knowledge as to how low carb works, you'll have more success than if you just try to wing it. People here are following all sorts of plans - Atkins is the most popular, and Protein Power, South Beach, the Zone, etc. Find one you like, and get started. I wish you much success!

| Glad to have you join us, MaryLee. As you're getting ready to LC and aren't sure what to eat, your best bet currently is to avoid Sugar and Flour products. That's about 80% of LC right there and will probably help you get started off on the right foot. Get that book when you can, though, because it's a BIG help, and just take your time learning the ropes. Once you get the hang of it, it's much easier than you probably ever imagined it could be. Welcome to LCE!

| Thanks for the welcomes. I really appreciate and need the support to do this. I was able to send my bag of grapes to work with my husband so that temptation is gone. I could have had a few of them but I wanted them all so best not to have them here. |

| I recommend the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins book, the new one was written after his death and from what I hear the newer editon has allowed foods that Dr. Atkins didn't and people have struggled with stalls and things like that. I recommend ordering it on line or finding a second hand book shop - that's where I got mine. |

| Wow...I just talked to Jere and asked if we could go by the used bookstore after tennis. Thanks for the edition suggestion because I would have gotten the newest version they have in stock. Will keep my fingers crossed for a 2002 edition! |

| The older edition didn't allow subtracting fiber out as I recall for "net carbs," which is pretty well accepted now. The main thing to be aware of is that the newer editions allow for specialty foods, or "frankenfoods" as we sometimes call them here. Generally, the more natural people eat, the better they tend to do and some of those foods can cause problems for folks. So that's something you can adjust yourself if you end up with a recent version of the book.

| I was able to find an older edition paperback of Atkins which I read on October 25th - Also got Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002 edition) which I am reading now. The books are very incouraging for what I'm trying to do. I had gotten away from packaged foods some time ago and cook from scratch for my husband and daughter for the most part. I started LCE because I ran out of insulin (10-12 units Humalog three to four times daily) I have seen something I haven't seen for 20 years - fasting blood sugars of 100-104 for the past 7 days. Prior to that my fasting blood sugars have been 138 - 158 which was pretty good for me! I've lost 12 pounds in this past two weeks and while I am grateful for that it was not my original purpose for LCE. Appreciate this site for information and support. |

| Welcome MaryLee. My wife is Type 2 diabetic. She still has quite the roller coaster with her meds and eating. Ends up being a viscious cycle take the meds to lower blood sugar levels, eat LC. Oops, now too low take in sugar to stabilize. Someday she will find the right balance for her. I sure hope you are working with a Doctor on your Diabetes. My original ATkin book was the 2002 version. I stuck to it perfectly and had great success. It wasn't until later when I started changing things up some with the "net carb" stuff that I had problems. I've restarted just last week on induction. Use this site and it's wealth of information and people resources to help you along. It will prove to be invaluable . I wish you well with your LC journey.

| Not to slam working with my doctor on diabetes but consistently told to avoid eggs and red meat for the past twenty years. While this was an accidental finding ... having the renewal script for my humalog insulin arrive four days after I was out was the best thing my doctor could have done for me. I do have a 12/4/08 follow up appointment so my numbers should tell something. Twenty years on the blood sugar rollercoaster was too long. I will be starting to add more carbs in the near future from vegetables and fruits. I've been at 6% for the past two weeks - will try and find my threshold for not raising my blood sugar. I have never been in this range for more than a reading or two over the past 20 years. I'm cautiously optimistic and thrilled. Thank you for the well wishes and support - Best wishes to your wife |

| Yesterday was difficult. Stresses back in play. Went from 8:00AM to 3:15AM with no food available. From then on I ate something LC until 7PM and finally went to bed. Box of ice cream sandwiches (not the organic healthy ones i used to get either) kept angling out of the freezer every time I opened the door to find some nuts or something to eat. Was tempted to cut one up in little pieces and try not to run up my blood sugar but ended up eating a dried mango slice I had from before I started LC ing. I found recipe for wasa and cream cheese treat but had nothing to make it with. I'm sure the stress of yesterday and the poor timing of eating through me mentally off track. First time I felt desperately hungry since I've started seriously low carbing. Waking up with a 106 blood sugar without meds was worth it though. I don't ever want to get caught feeling desperate for something sweet and crunchy again. Must get some food made up to get through today better. |

| planning ahead and being prepared in advance is totally your best bet, Mary. If you have somethign appealing available to you at all times, the stuff you're hoping to avoid is WAY less tempting, she says speaking from experience.
