Default Low Carb as weight maintenance

I'm coming to the end of a very successful medical diet, however now I must maintain my weight loss!

I know that LC is the way to go. But I must find the best combination of fats/proteins/carbs and calories to make that happen.

I've read about the Optimal Diet where you carefully calculate your bodies required protein grams per day, then you build around that... leaning more towards fats than carbs. But, from that area I can't find any idea of about caloric levels.

Does anyone have suggestions for maintenance?

Thank you,
Karla

Welcome, Karla.

I'm not particularly familiar with the Optimal Diet, so I can't speak to that. Certainly, if this is your chosen plan, you may want to purchase the book which goes with it. Most low carb programs do not place much - if any - emphasis on calories, although I know some of our members do take them into consideration. Since I don't do that, I'll leave it to others to comment on that.

You do have an unusual entry to low carb eating. Most low carb programs take you through your weight loss gradually and it is over this extended period of time that you start to learn about different foods and the effect on your own metabolism. While following one's chosen plan, one learns which foods and in which amounts work for you. I imagine you will have to go through the same "learning curve" to find a way of eating that works for you.

I wish you the best!

Welcome, Karla. Congrats on your progress thusfar! And good for you that you're planning for maintenance instead of assuming there will be nothing to think about at this stage. That's very smart.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the Optimal Diet either, so I can't help, although I would echo Maggie's advice that to get the book for whatever plan you're interested in.

If you're still considering plans, you also may be interested in Protein Power, which has more recommendations on the amount of carbs, protein, etc. than something like Atkins does.

Thanks for the input. I've read the book... there's just not a lot of clear information on my questions... maybe they got lost in the translation from Polish. I'll look into other plans to see what I can find.
