| Ive started this plan yesterday and just wanted to ask whether spinach is allowed in the first week. Im also confused about the net carbs .v. not counting the fiber. Whats the effect of not counting the net carbs and why do those who dont count it say they lose more weight? Looking forward to chatting to you. Rhiannon |

| Welcome, Rhiannon. ![]() I've moved your post to Introductions, so it will be better seen. I'm not all that familiar with the 1972 program, since I started my low carb lifestyle in the 90's. I know we have some members who have followed the '72 version, so I'll leave it to them to address your question. Hope you'll make yourself at home here.

Rhiannon. The original Atkins plan has been revised several times. The first major revision was to recognize that fiber could be deducted from total carbs. In my mind, that was the only dietary viable change that has been made. The later changes to exclude sugar alcohols etc were driven by commercial reasons and profit motive. Everyone is different. If you are extremly resistant, you may do better not deducting fiber. However, I suggest you try the Atkins program that permits deducting fiber to determine if you are truly resistant. The difference in deducting fiber can be shown with frozen spinach. A 10 once package of frozen spinach, cooked has 10.86 grams of carbs with 8.1 grams of fiber. Under original (1972)Atkins you would count 10.56 carbs per package. Under revised Atkins you would count 2.46 net carbs. Under either plan, spinach would be acceptable, you would need to limit your intake under original Atkins more than under revised Atkins. hth

| I don't have the book in front of me, but regarding spinach - you had to count it towards your 1 cup of higher carb daily veggies rather than your 2-3 cups of leafy green lettuces, because it's higher in carbs than lettuce is. So you can have it, just it more moderate amounts than say, romaine. |
