Default It's the carbs stupid!

Hi, normally not at all a forum kind of gal...but am ALL IN this time...
Many attempts, many failures, had my AHA! moment Aug 2, when I could not fit into a stadium chair at the ballpark..really.
I know in my heart that carbs are not good for me, I feel so much better when I don't eat them, it almost as if I am hypnotized, must stuff my face...then I wake up and realize what I have done!
I need support, something I haven't done in the past. I am not following specific plan, I have been a serial dieter in the past, so I know what to do, the problem is staying with it long enough to see the results I want, always those evil little carbs creep back in, I sabotage myself...cannot do that this time, I am 48, mother of 3 (college/HS/middle school), a preschool teacher/director who needs lots of energy and should look professional. I do regularly exercise, and have a beautiful yellow lab who likes to play and walk.
Finally, I am not using the scale, I am going entirely by the fit of my clothes and the way I feel. I know when I am losing, and I know the feeling of gaining all too well. If I had to estimate, I am about 240ish...I become obsessed and live and die by that number, which can be up or down 5 lbs in a day..I would like to be 160ish...but that is a long way down the road and I am here for today, yesterday is over, today is now and tomorrow is not here yet...thanks for reading!

Hi Laura,
to LCE! We're glad you're here!

I have to be honest with you, here. I truly think the many successes so many[LCE members] have had, is in fact, they are following an established LC plan. It's a *plan* because the author or founder, takes us through all the steps...successful times when everything is clicking, to times when things aren't so good...the plan will get you through, yanno?
I would really urge you to consider selecting a plan...be it Atkins, Protein Power, South Beach, or any of the others that appeal to you. Having the book for your plan as a reference is invaluable, IMO.

At any rate, I wish you much success on your journey to healthy eating and weight loss.

Welcome, Laura.

Like Shelley, I've been low carbing for a long time and I've observed the same things that she has. If you have a plan, your odds of long term success are increased.

Regardless, we're happy to have you here and wish you the very best on your journey.

Thank you all for the support, I think I misspoke, quite new to the idea of posting, a little nervous about it actually...I have in my arsenal of books: protein power, atkins, south beach, you on a diet, the glucose revolution, intuitive eating, the step diet, the idiot's guide to losing weight, perfect health etc....what I have done is formulate a plan that has elements from all that I have read and learned about, that feels right to me at this point. The emotional/spiritual element is a huge component. The idea that I deserve to treat myself with love and respect, feeding my body and mind with good food and thoughts is new. My many failed attempts lacked this, instead I was filled with a sense of desperation, my internal dialog was rife with negativity. I don't believe I can move forward without intending to be positive, to envision my outcome...does that make sense?
On a goofier note, I am menopausal, and in this week of detox (as I have been calling it), I have been sweating bullets, mini hot flashes that are wicked! Anyone else experience this? I am drenched 20 times a day...I am feeling good, so is it a cleansing sweat? I'm fashioning fans out of anything I can get my hands on, stripping...the Mr. is loving that!

Absolutely! That is often times the hardest obstacle to over come...putting ourselves, AND our health first! Good for you!
I'm also glad to hear you have most of the nutrition home *library* that I do. LOL!
Many times we have to tweek or customize a food plan to make it work for us; and again, there is nothing wrong with that as long as it doesn't become a frantic *plan hopping* thing....meaning, when the weight loss slows, the person says..."OMG!...plan A is not working...I'm going to plan B....then 24 hours later....OMG!!!...plan B is not working, I'm going to plan C....then OMG!!!"....you get the idea. LOL! (I have some expierence with "plan hopping"...and let me tell ya, it leads you right down the path of yo-yo[dieting]hood!) Not good!

Again...best wishes on your journey! You CAN DO IT!!!

Thanks Shelley, I like your "way of living forever" I am putting that into my intention prayer, which is- To connect body~ mind ~spirit by envisioning a long, lean, flexible strong healthy body, with a loving, generous, fun loving spirit, and a mind free of traps, negativity and doubt, a way I can live forever. I say this when I get up, before bed, anytime I need a boost....

glad to have you join us, Laura. I've said many times that what happens in your head is just as (or more) important than what you're putting in your mouth.

hope you'll enjoy yourself here.

I know that feeling only too well! The good news is that the healthier you are the more intense your hot flashes are.....now that makes you feel good doesn't it? According to my Menopausal Years book by Susun Weed, " The frequency, intensity, and duration of hot flashes is unique to each woman, but in general, healthier women have more hot flashes."

I have that book and have read that too! So I keep telling myself, hot flashes mean healthy. BAH!

I've also noticed when I am taking my vitamins regularly and popping a big, honkin' omega 3 pill, it sets off my HF's. I had to stop taking it during the summer. I can handle them during the winter, but NOT in the summer.

Thanks for the hot flash info...they have subsided a bit, I am now about 3 weeks in, and gave blood this week and my BP was 110/70 AND all of my clothes are loose and baggy. My favorite capris can slide off without unbuttoning! I have settled very comfortably into my meat/veg/fruit/dairy eating plan, and and have pushed my exercise up. My lab and I did 4 miles yesterday, and she was the one tired at the end! My husband is diabetic, and he is getting on the bandwagon too. It is a day to day reprogramming of my brain, I strive to reroute my brain patterns, I'm not at all deprived, but alive!
Thanks for the support!

That is super fanTAStic! It's always good to have a family member's support. And your DH will only benefit! My DH is one of those guys that if he doesn't eat a little higher amount of carbs drops 5 pounds in one night. He doesn't have an ounce of fat on him. It's NOT fair! But he does support my eating style. I buy him granola bars or give him regular bready type stuff, so he's happy. I am not tempted by his snacks 'cuz I make my own, so we've worked out a balance. He likes my treats I make, but respects that they are for me and doesn't try to eat them all.
