Employers do not get away with that sort of thing much in Washington. They are fined very heavily if people do not get their breaks. 4 hours is the law. But eight is accepted for light duty. Drivers or machinery workers must have a break every 4 hours. 12 hour shifts can be limited to two 15 minute breaks.

When I was an employer I treated my guys real good and they treated me even better.

I'm glad you do have time for your chair. It is really nice to be able to see the finished things in such a short time frame. I always have long range projects that may or may not come off. Enjoy your day and don't forget 30 minutes for the craft room!

OOPS...........forgot about the artroom today. Oh well. I worked on drawing fairies today. I did dig through some of my art books up in my disaster room and I'm surprised I even found them. I think I have a couple of fairies nailed down.

I believe I heard the HR person say last year that they didn't HAVE to give us breaks. BULLsh**!!!! But they give us breaks no matter what. They have never refused me a 10 min. break, but lunch is a different story. I think when it gets really busy, I will tell them first thing in the morning that I am willing to stay for 8 or 9 hours (if I'm not already scheduled for 8) as long as they give me at least a HALF hour lunch break. It's called, "Let's make a Deal." What they usually do is schedule us for 6 or 7 hour shifts, that way they don't have to give us lunch breaks and get the phones covered during the noon hour. BUT, if they won't let me get a lunch break, I WON'T volunteer to stay. They'll be cutting their noses off to spite their faces. That's their problem. But I AM going to need the hours and the money.

when i moved here to idaho i went to work for a lady that NEVER gave them breaks...i said..uh... ya know... i think I will make you a nice breakroom... how bout that... well i made a cute little table.. put a flower in a vase on it.. dish of candies...
welllllllll she would give off vibes of NOT wanting them to take breaks.. so they never would... (the younger kids were especially intimidated) ...

soon the little table got covered with junk... her son ate all the candy...
but ya know what? i STILL took breaks.. i would go over to the espresso shop and hang out for a few moments... then take my drink back and have it there...
someone told me there were no rules for breaks LEGALLY in idaho ... but dangit...i was NOT going to feel like crap all day not getting a MENTAL break from the job...

heck... when i first got there ... they would go on buying trips and not PAY the paychecks till they got back.. even if it was several DAYS past pay day..
i told her that she would either pay me on time ..or i walked..

she was never late again... ;-)

I'm so spoiled from contracting to the gov't. We HAVE to take a lunch break. Some days I'd rather work through and leave a little early, but we're not supposed to. The chair sounds incredible Barb. Will you post a pic when it's done?

Renee, I sure will. Actually it will be up on Gorton's website (the place I'm doing the chair for) and DH will be putting the pics up on the website. I just asked him when the pics will be posted there and he said mid May. So there will be a little waiting to see it, but it will be there. I would say I am about half done with it. I have to turn it in by April 15th. So when the chairs go up for auction, I will post a direct link to them.

I'm not sure how ENFORCED the labor laws are, but if they EVER deny me a break, I will look into it. So far it hasn't been a problem for 10 minute ones. But lunch becomes an issue because of scheduling. Sometimes you just have to suck it up tho.

I hope work is going well for you this week. I hope that fella takes good pictures of your chair. You have great plans for it. Maybe you'll get a digital camera this year so you can show us that wall you did.

How good is your diet lately. And new LC treats?

    Howdy Stephen,

I got called OFF work Weds and Thurs. It's been REALLY slow, but April and May it will be insanely busy. This is the calm before the storm. As soon as the weather breaks, people will start to be thinking about their pools, getting them open and ready for Memorial Weekend. The week before that weekend is a nervous breakdown waiting to happen. Then in July, it gets really dead again. So I've had time to work on THE CHAIR. (TC)

I have gotten the "flagstone path" done, complete with "moss" growing throughout the spaces. Today I taped off and painted the "picket fence." It's starkly white and will need some "dirtying up." I think I will water some black paint down VERY thin and take a natural sponge and streak it. Then I will add grass blades at the bottom. We have a busy weekend coming up. Tomorrow we are playing D&D and Sunday we are watching DS-S and DIL's kids so they can catch a movie. I hope to get a bit more work done on TC tomorrow morning. Monday I am scheduled 7-3 (and I WILL get a half hour lunch break IF I last the whole day and they don't send me home early.)

A digital camera is NOT in the near future here, funds are REALLY tight right now. I think the Gorton people will be taking the pictures of the chairs and then they send them to DH, who crops, resizes, sharpens them and all that jazz. Who knows, he might have ME do that, since he's taught me how and it's "monkey" work. He tells me what size the thumbnails and enlarged pics should be and I do it all and then send him the file and he transfers the data up to the server. (Or we upload the data directly from my machine too......depends if we have a file directory for that particular client on mine.) One day, I hope to work for them and ditch the swimming pool supplies job.

It seems DS-S and DIL are getting along for now. And they've talked more about coming and talking to us. So a little progress on that front. But it will take some time to get them to commit. They have to be ready. We don't want to PUSH them. But I'll betcha the next time they have a blowup, it might become more of a possibility. They both so need to heal from the hurt they've caused each other.

I tend to think of the kids first. But the more complicated fact that the parents in trouble are every bit as significant. If the parents are hurting, so are the kids. When the parents are thriving there is a a greater chance for growth and individual charactor and self confedence to bloom. It is good that they get to spend time with you and your DH. A healthy enviroment that they know they can count on for calm. Calm doesn't sound like much but kids need it too, as much as they need to raise some heck.

I wouldn't have my digital camera if it wasn't for the sculpting. It helps in several ways. One is documenting intellectual property and dating it. You might of noticed the news paper in the background of one of the shots. In that series is some unique tooling I have devised, but doubt I will persue for capitol gain. They are sculpting tools with a new handle system i have not found anywhere else. I also use it for mach up images of sculptural posing. Plus I could have a model pose and slowly turn them on a heavyduty lazy susan and cature it to mpeg.

Have fun with the D&D. Hope nobody's spouce blows their stack this time. Slay a dragon for me.

No dragons to slay, but MY character finished off a nasty 7th level Harpie, all rotting and icky. My character went into berserk mode and could not miss hitting any of her little whelps and a mob of "Night of the Living Dead" zombies. It was a BLAST!!! DIL called twice to see when DS-S would be home, but didn't bit** at him and asked him nicely to bring her home a bottle of wine.

We are watching the kids tomorrow afternoon. So I will be busily cleaning up painting mess and getting various stuff put away and out of the baby's reach so he can toodle around the place and not have to be told "NO" all the time. We like to get breakables and outlets covered before they get here to make our stuff safe and to make the place safe for them. Then we can relax and just enjoy them. They always have fun when they come over here...........no stress, no one yelling at them, no one fighting and they cooperate for us and are just a delight. They are such easy kids, and it just flabbergasts me when their mother says they are little hellions. Well, of course they act up for her, she doesn't relate to them well. Oh well, they'll have a nice time here for a few hours.

Maybe when they come over to pick the kids up, we can bring the subject up of talking to them (sans kids) and see where that goes. I might just say something to her like, "So, when do you think you guys might be able to come over, so we can sit and talk?" or something like that.

    Hey Barb

I just read your dragon post. It sounds like you won't be 4th level for too much longer if you keep hacking up 7th level harpies It sounds like to much fun.

Glad you had a good weekend with your family

Ya, LOL, I expect us to be going up a level pretty soon!!! It was a blast. My DH said last night, it's a good thing that harpie didn't escape. I said, "Oh I wasn't going to let up on her. And the mage's web spell made all the difference." She kept losing her rolls on her saves for escaping............good thing!!!!! What a blast!!!!! I LOVE killing evil baddies in that game!!!!!

my grandson was moved around so much by his parents that i had his dad paint my bedroom at my old home BLUE WITH CLOUDS ... i told him way back then that no matter WHERE he was... he could look up to that blue skie with clouds and know he was HOME... when we MOVED ourselves about 5 years ago... i had his dad (with him and my daughter helping) paint THIS bedroom of mine the same way....
sometimes i think about painting it a different way... but i figure he should be about 18 before i do that..*L*....

have to agree with ya stephen... the kids are the important part of the equation...

Barb of course you will get a free necklace when I finally get them done! You have put up with my rantings ore than anyone of late. Close to a year before I cast those though. Maybe sooner I do have a marketing concern on that one. Kind of an all or the profit or non of the profit type situation. Small items are so darn easy to knock off. I have too many projects in mind. Their is such a thing as too much creativity.

Kim that is one of the most awsome things I have every heard of. I came accross another grandmother that did almost the same thing. Great minds do think alike.

Ya I listened to the whole dragon thread today, a very nice distraction. Bed is calling me, nite all.

Kim, I have always wanted to do that. But I guess I will settle on the celestial/nighttime sky for my bathroom. After doing the clouds on TC, I may still do a daytime clouds scene in one of my rooms one of these days. I'll feel like Michelangelo, LOLOL

Stephen, that is so sweet of you. It CAN be difficult to be creative sometimes. When you have all sorts of ideas going at once it can get dizzying. I get that way when it nears Christmas time. I get so many ideas...........too bad we have to waste time sleeping, eh? LOL

I stuck the glow-in-the-dark stars all over my little guy's room and he uses them as night lights. He always goes upstairs and turns on his light about a half an hour before bed. This way he's sure his stars are "recharged" before he gets up there. When he finally grows out of those stars I'm going to peel them off and put them in his memory box to keep and remind me.
