| Can you tell me more about the whole idea of lower body/leg work burning more calories? Is there a website/book that you can refer me to, or is this just something you know due to life experience? Thanks...

I've picked that up from discussions with trainers, searching on the web and experience. Your legs are your biggest muscle group. That is where you body pushes the most blood. An example of how it works is to look at any of the available caloric charts for exercises. Walking burns far more calories than say curling a small weight. I've even seen exercise gurus indicate that the practice of carrying small weights while power walking realling doesn't add much. It does help your arm strength. But negligable in calorie burn to increasing the pace of the walk. You don't hear much about upper body cardio do you? Most aerobics and other cardio such as jogging, swimming, walking biking etc. are all based around lower body, legs. Sorry to get so long winded. I hope I've answered your question. Tom.

| Tom: Thanks for the info - I've been trying to plan some workouts without the 65 dollar/hour personal trainer fee, and it's been a little haphazard, so I've been reading with interest about the 'circuit training' workout that you've been using. I don't know if that's the correct word, but I like the idea of using different machines within a workout; at times, it's hard for me to stay on a treadmill, an elliptical machine, or anything else for 45 plus minutes at a time. I'm getting long winded as well - thanks again for the info

FYI, I've been watching the trainers at the gym and I notice they really don't do a lot of machines for the ladies. What they do use, they run very low weights. I suggest you go to your gym (I'm assuming your already a member) and just watch the trainers while your doing your "circuit" or eliptical. You can learn a great deal just watching and learning from them as well as observing what others are doing. I've seen numerous different systems in play, from extrememly slow reps to extreemely fast reps. I've seen quite a lot of balance moves. Not sure, but they could be pilates moves. I haven't read up on pilates. The ones I've seen done would be brutal for me. The next thing would be to try those exercises yourself and see how you feel. I have very strong legs but both my knees are totally worn out. So I am limited on what leg activities I can do. Happy peddling!

| I did some reasonable cardio work today - 36 minutes on the treadmill, and weight training with the machines that you use while sitting (closing your legs until your knees touch, or pushing away). Sorry, can't be more specific about it. I did try to watch one of the trainers today with a client, but he was mainly doing the introductory tour. And, we have more than 8,000 members at our Wellness Center, so it gets to be quite an adventure tracking other folks ![]() It wasn't too busy today; I try to stay out of there between 4-8, when it's so crowded, that they actually offer valet parking for people who can't take the hunt for a parking space.

| Tina - Just keep observing. You never quit learning new things, even at the gym. It is very surprising to find out how many different methods of working a certain muscle there are. You'll eventually see one that intrigues you. Just got out of a long meeting. This one had like 40 engineers in there. Some may understand this, Better than Valium to put you to sleep, a room full of engineers. :( Trying get boosted up for my afternoon workout. 1hour to quitting time. Yea!

Well had a great w/o last night. And my morning cardio. Important thing for me to remember (may not be the same for others) When I feel tired/weak is when it is most important to continue to exercise. Being tired is an indication that my body has run out of easily accessable energy sources and now is turning to stored fats. I see my largest weight loss steps after a really tough night at the gym. ![]() I also sleep like a log on those nights. Like last night. Later... Tom.

| That's interesting - I find that when I exercise at night, I don't sleep well at all. My best sleep nights (if that's even a phrase to use) occur after a successful morning workout, followed by one at 5:00 or 6:00 P.M. But then again, I found that I slept better when I was in California (I see you're in NV). It may have something to do with the sunlight, and cleaner (at least to me anyway) air. Not scientific, but sleep in Chico, CA and Austin, TX was easier to come by...

On the late exercise. I don't think it is recommended to WO just before bed. The morning as you are doing is considered the "best" time. That way you rev up your metabolism and keep it going longer as you go thru the day. My evening WO ends about 6:30-7:00. I get to bed 9-10. So not bad. I have to hurry and eat as soon as I get home to allow for digestion time before going horizontal. If I eat just before bed it sometimes causes acid reflux. YUK! :( DW and I are going out tonight to find some ramekins to make the mock danish in. Hmmm. They are good. Made some in some ziplock containers the other night. Thought they might come out better in the little ramekins. TTYL Tom.
