| I think Kim's 'talking' to Rhonda (Texanflowr). I've never considered getting the ribs without the sauce at Applebee's. Applebee's is the closest food chain to where I live, so I'll have to try that the next time I go :fork:

| Oh I get it. It's been a long day. As Emerald would say "It's a pork fat thing!" I love pork & pork fat. It has other benefits on this diet. Keeps things running smoothly.

| Emerill - o.k. I get it now ![]() Tom: What exactly is the Hamster wheel? Maybe you detailed it earlier, but I always want to know what it is. Also, I read the link to the intense training. Can you give me an example of the type of cardio session that you did when you were training using that plan?

| Tina, I equate doing the treadmill, stationary bike, or stepper for long periods to the Hampster running in his little exercise wheel. Just running like all get out, but going nowhere fast! That's what we do. That is why exercise experts suggest that people find and activity that causes you to reach cardio heart rates but keeps you mentally active. Cross Country biking, hiking, etc. My latest thing is to use the pocket PC while on the bike or eliptical at they gym. That is how I've been able to increase the times up to 30 minutes. I surf the web while I'm doing it. I'm thinking of adding a wireless keyboard with joystick for here in my computer room/home gym. My cardio back when I did real HIIT was very intense. I always run a heart monitor (at the time I was utilizing additional help from ephedra, for boosted metabolizm) I would get to the point of having the eliptical ramps at max and turning 150 step rate and hitting 180 BPM HR. That is about 120% of max. I pushed extremely hard. Not advisable to anybody! Then and still, my normal BP went from 140/88 to 120/69 and HR from 79 to 68. My body now coasts along. There in lies much of my present weight problems. The slower metabolism is great for longevity but I can darn near gain weight on a 1000 calorie diet. I have to keep the activity high. Again Cin-Cout should be a negative number. Don't know if I answered your question or not. You need to find what works for you and your body. Your personal drive will push you along. Just like diets, no 1 exercise program works for all. Try everything. See what works for you. Oh, yeah, use the web. So much info available, it's unbelievable. I personally move around between several different circuits, free weights, different cardio methods. Right now I'm staying off the eliptical for awhile and sticking to the bike. Less wear on the knee joints. The pressure is now at a relatively unused part of the joint. Kim, seems like Vegas would be a better possibility than New Orleans for awhile :( I would love for DW and I to meet anybody that visits here. We are not much into gambling ourselves and only go to the casinos when visitors come in. Got to get to bed now. 4am comes quickly G'nite

| Hey Tom - Stopping into to say 'Hi'! I've been doing TONS of research the last few days - and thought you might find this VERY interesting. There's research that shows that extended aerobic activity combined with weight lifting actually results in weight GAIN instead of weight loss. I know we've talked about the High Intensity Interval Training on another thread - but thought I'd mention it over here. I'm not sure if I can copy/paste the important part - but just in case I'm doing something I shouldn't - here's the link too: http://www.musclemedia.com/training/hiit.asp The important part:For years, we've been told low-intensity aerobic exercise is the best method for ridding the body of excess fat. I'm here to tell you that's not the case. You knew deep down, anyhow, that busting your butt burned off more fat than an exercise that allowed you to read at the same time, didn't you? Well, research shows our instincts were right. The reason this low-effort theory of aerobic exercise came about is a study showed low-intensity exercise burns a greater percentage of calories from fat as opposed to carbs;however, when high-intensity exercise is practiced, the research showed the percentage of fuel from carbs is increased, while the amount of fat utilized is greater than or equal to that burned during low-intensity exercise. In research, HIIT has been shown to burn adipose tissue more effectively than low-intensity exercise?up to 50% more efficiently! In other words, HIIT speeds up your metabolism and keeps it revved up for some time after your workout. The bottom line is HIIT training burns a greater number of total calories than low-intensity training, and more calories burned equals more fat lost. What I'm suggesting is you forget about the "calories burned" readout on the stairstepper or Lifecycle; if you practice HIIT training, the majority of calories burned will come after your workout! Here's some other excellent advise: http://www.hussman.org/fitness - he's low fat - but gets into info on low glycemic (lower carb) veggies after working out... Exercise has two functions: one is to trigger metabolic adaptation, and the other is to do mechanical work. Both expend a lot of energy, and if you want to burn a lot of fat, you want to take advantage of both. The short-duration, high intensity stuff triggers adaptation (muscle gain, enzyme changes, cellular reorganization, lactate tolerance, cardiovascular improvement). You burn fat afterward in order to replace muscle glycogen. The longer duration, lower intensity aerobic activity (breathing deeply but still "conversational") allows you to create an energy demand that burns fat then and there. If you include both types, without overtraining (see below), you're going to lose fat fast. Might be a good idea to combine the two? |

| BTW, What's your name? Good articles. I've read many about the diffrences between slow long duration and short harder intensity activities. There is a lot of good to that. Ever notice that most TM's or steppers or biks have an interval training program. That's what it is. You just put it up to the level youwant to push for. Here's a link to a wealth of info along those lines. You could be reading for days. http://www.bodybuildingforyou.com/bo...oss-tips-1.htm I personally go thru mood swings between wanting to lean out and get down to 175 lbs and be a rail and be 200+ lbs and muscle. Guess I'm a little fickle on that. There is still the society push towards being the big strong man. Fighting still rages on. I guess in a way I practive very much what your articles are pointing out. My thing is that with my knee situation, I can't hit the extreme high levels that I'm pushing for. I can get there and then in about 2 weeks it finally catches up to me. I'm kind of limping some now. But it doesn't slow me down at the gym. Combining the 2. I'm not sure that would help. Might counteract each others benefits. I prefer to alternate at maybe 2-3 week intervals. Keeps the body working. As I said before, see what works for you. Maybe combining could work well for you. Enjoy!! N/M about the name I went to your Blog page. Hello Dee. My eldest daughter is Dee Dee short for Dominique Danielle. DW was fascinated with the Sound of Music during her first marriage.

| Well - imagine that - mine is Donna Denise...D.D or Dee Dee! What can I say - my parents had issues? Seriously - my dad's name is William Larkin, W.L. affectionately called 'Dub'. I'm the only girl with 7 older brothers, and one younger brother, so I guess they were all out of ideas by then... ;-) Holy Cow - that has a plethera of information!!! I can't WAIT to go through it! |

| Hmmnnn, been reading through the articles, but I think I'm going to have to concentrate on trying to balance out the exercise this month. 8 hours of walking last week, and 1 hour this week, but 13 hours of dance class. The dance varies in intensity, but I need to even it out. The intensity idea makes sense, but like you said (Tom), you have to see what works for you. Donna: I'm interested to hear how it goes!

| Well I blew it again tonight. This morning I skipped the eliptical and did just bike. Went thru all my circuit etc and felt really good. So what does dummy (me) do? Get on the darn eliptical tonight. Now my knee is complaining greater then usual. I think it had to do with my weigh in weight when I got there. It really pumped me up. STUPID ME! I'm making good progress. I just need to find what works without wearing on my knee joint. I think I wil focus on the bike, rowing machine and doing my circuit in HIIT fashion. Dee, If your in 24hr, then you probably are familiar with the 24 minute eXpress circuit I'm doing. Most of them have it. The ab machine I'm using is the precor unit that you push forward on the handles to crunch. BTW made it to 800 tonight. I'll post all the stats on the exercise thread. Did you figure how to link those or any pictures yet? Later,

| Dang, I just ordered an anotomically correct knee joint for one of my trial coming up..... those injuries are not pretty, nor is knee surgery. Of course, I am one that pushes myself to the limit on most things too. Hope your knee improves! |
