Default Shin splints...

I've posted on this before that it was difficult for me to walk (especially at a fast pace) but I'm wondering if it is shin splints that I do have. On the side of my left shin area after todays walk of 1.5 mile in 30 minutes, it had three different spots that had knots, about as round as a golf ball sticking out about 1/4- 1/2 inch.
Is this shin splints?

Anyone with any knowledge of this I would appreciate the info. I think I'm going to schedule a doctors appointment.

HI Tim,
Shin splints are pain in the anterior compartment of the shin *bone*(the tibia). This pain does usually follow strenuous exercise and the cause is ischemia of the muscles in the compartment and can also be from small tears in the tissues.
I think you would be VERY wise to see a Dr. Shin splints can take a while to get over.
Be sure you are stretching well before you hit the trail as well as after your walks.

Thanks Shelley.

With it being on the side do you think it could be shin splints?

Tim,
We can not give medical advice here at LCE.
Do I think it could be a shin splint??? I would not even venture to guess.
Again, I would say, see a sports medicine or orthopedic physician.

Let us know what you find out though, ok?

S.

Ditto what Shelley said about giving medical advice... I too think you should go see a doctor. I have had shin splints and they have never involved any "lumps" of any sort. It's more just a pain in the shin - you'd know it if you had them. Please, please please go see someone about this.

Nothing major, no sign of blood clots or bone damage.

Just muscle spasms, or something like that. He said the sudden start of exercise is what is probably causing it. He said to keep riding the bike and layoff the walking for 2 weeks. Start walking at a slow pace in 2 weeks.

A treadmill at a hotel I was in, I had it set at 3.5 MPH and my leg started hurting so I slowed it down to 3.3 MPH and it was fine.
While at home I have a park a 1/4 mile from my house and it has a 1 mile track. I've been walking that 1.5 miles and trying to stay within the half hour. I guess I need to not try and focus on the time as much.

Weighed 316 today. Doctor was real happy with my progress (20 lbs in less than 2 months) blood pressure was never an issue but it even got better. Before it was 120/80, now 116/70. Had my blood work done today to see how my Cholesterol is doing, it was a little high last year.

Thanks guys!

I can only speak from my experience so...but anyway...

I asked a friend who is a personal trainer how to do the exercises I do everyday properly. He took a look and I was doing a few things wrong he even corrected my walking. I was surprised when he said "now walk across the room and let me see how you walk when you working out". He said my steps were to long and that I needed to take shorter more deliberate steps even when I am walking fast.. I didn't know I tend to look down when I walk he fussed at me about that and taught me how to hold my arms at my sides so my hands wouldn't go numb. Poof that little pain I was getting in in front of my legs went away and with my now using arm weights I have little muscles starting to show on my biceps instead of floppy arms. woohoo!

I hope everything is still going well for you and you have resolved your shin pain.
