Katalina, that's pure myth! I weigh 289 and have been as high as 341 and have been riding the whole time! For the last 4 years I've totaled over 1000 miles each season (I'm in WI and weather only permits riding from late April to Oct. or so). I try to get at least 100 miles a week if weather permits.

Here's a link to the rides I've done....MapMyRide.com | mamagiff's Profile and Cycling Routes in Kansasville, Wisconsin

I live in farm country with rolling hills so I always get a great workout....now if I can just get the food to click, I might actually lose weight!

Whoa Linda-those mileages are impressive. 52 miles-yikes! My inner slug quivers and shakes in horror.
Nice to know that there are bikes out there for us more generously endowed gals and guys. I know that I read that because I'd been thinking about bike riding for a while and that article stopped me dead in my tracks. Boo-Hiss on them. I'll start snooping around bike shops to see what types would be best. Thanks.

My bike is about 15 yrs. old and has been modified by DH...not because of my weight but because he likes to tinker on bikes and thinks he makes it better!

Any good bike shop will be able to help you pick a bike if you work with them. Tell them what you want to spend, where you will ride (roads, trails, both, so on).

If you have any questions about getting started, let me know...I'll help where I can! I'm just a recreational rider but I love riding and have lots of experience as an overweight, older woman on a bike!

Thanks-I'll take you up on that. I'm now having this fantasy that I'll walk into the bike shop and all there will be buff and lycra'd up the whazoo. And then they'll be me. Gotta pinch myself and get over it.

I checked the weather map when I got up to see if I would be able to ride today and it didn't look good. But DH talked me into it. He said even a short ride is better than none. So I planned to ride to the post office to drop off a Netflix movie. The post office is about 5 miles away. The weather seemed to be ok so I just kept riding and ended up with 22.43 miles!

Storms should be here soon, the one I was worried about blew to the north of us but there is more. I'll be doing a yoga dvd later on.

walked 60 min/3.58 miles/202 cal burn. STBO!!!

I think I'll end up helping DH do the lawn here in a bit, so maybe get in another small calorie burn. Definitely a day to stay hydrated outdoors! Not to mention the sunscreen!

happy trails......

Just finished my am 60 minute walk. No pain in my feet!!!! I can't even begin to tell you what a difference this makes in my attitude. Thanks for the heads up about the New Balance shoes. Beautiful morning, sunny and coolish, will probably hit the mid-seventies today-that's a biggie for us in the Northwest.

Kat,
Which ones(New Balance) did you end up with? And did you also get the arch supports as well? I'm sold on NBs for life I do believe. I can NOT even stand for my feet to hurt! Oye!
Glad your tootsies are feeling good!

Shell-I got the 1123's, 2 pair to alternate, and a couple of super arch support inserts. I'm grateful that you told me about them. The shoes keep my ankles from rotating inward which keeps my feet where they're suppose to be-LOL. What a difference in how I feel-I was using the Brooks brand which ain't cheap either but these are much better.
I keep thinking about my mom-she was a RN and nurse practitioner-and on her feet all day. She didn't have flat feet like me but you know old nurses-they start to fall apart after awhile. When I was a teenager she went into Manhattan and had these shoes specifically molded and made for her feet. They looked like space shoes-it was the late '60's and we had just gone to the moon. Everyone razzed her about her space shoes, but she would just smile the smile of a happy woman with pain free footsies.

yep...we do!!! LOL! I must admit, I do have clunkey ole nurse's feet, and I think alot of my feet problems arose from wearing *nurse's shoes*. They were pretty awful, but at the time I was in clinical nursing, *athletic* shoes were NOT allowed; they had to fall under strict dress code, be white and POLISHED and kept CLEAN! Some of the worst shoes ever, I tell ya!!
Then, when I was in administrative nursing, again, a dress code was in force, and obviously, having to wear suits and tailored dresses, meant *dress* shoes...oye!...can you say BIG PAIN?? LOL! But, now I've come full circle, only working as flex time, maybe one or two days a month at the most, I can now wear the New Balances for work! BIG YIPEE-SKIPEE!! Long story short, if I could've had the New Balances from the very start of my career, I don't think I would have had anywhere near the foot problems I've had over the last 5-10 years. Well....now, you didn't ask for all that, did ya??? LOL!

I'm truly glad the NBs are workin' for ya!!! And, I also work with a nurse that was a big ole Brooks only gal, but after I got my NBs, she tried them and LOVES them to; says she'll never go back to the Brooks.

OK...boy, did I get side tracked....LOL!
Soooooooo.....just got back from walking:
63 min/3.73 miles/207 cal burn.
It took almost a full mile to get my leg muscles stretched out enough before I could *turn on* the speed. Yikes! I think I may have to lengthen by warm up and pre-walk stretches.

happy trails....

Yeah Shell-but did you wear the white hat? Hated the one that looked like an upside down cupcake liner. My mom always would tell us kids that she EARNED that cap, thank you very much. We would just and snicker, nasty little monkeys that we were.
I walked 3 times yesterday-60 minutes in the morning, 30 minutes past lunch, and 20 minutes in the evening. Resting today as I'm off for a hike early tomorrow morning.
