Yesterday, I finally made the decision to get out and walk, even if it killed me. I've been sitting in front of the tv and the computer and not moving at all, and at 67 years old (young?), that's the worst thing I could be doing to myself. So, yesterday, I managed to do 3/10ths of a mile. I really wanted to go further, but we've been having a ghastly heat wave, and the humidity is brutal. We're breaking records, even for our area in Florida (in October). Actually, for the first day, I don't think that's bad. It's at least a start. While I'm really happy with yesterday's accomplishment, I knew it was really dumb to go out at the hottest part of the day, so today I got out earlier. It's already steamy out there, but I did TA-DA------1/2 mile!! Okay, we all have to start with baby steps, right? Today, I would have done more (and might), but this past year, I find heat and humidity have a bad effect on my breathing, so I can push it just so far. I suspect it's probably a very mild case of COPD, since only certain conditions seem to trigger it. In any event, I'm proud of me for finally getting up and moving. Do I have to force myself to do it? You betcha, but if that's what it takes, that's what it's going to take. **Update........ I forced myself to get out and do another 1/2 mile, since there's a slight breeze blowing (a warm breeze, but better than nothing). After 3 round trips (3/10ths of a mile), I pushed myself (thinking of the Biggest Loser all the while), and managed to do another two round trips. Now I know what it's like to walk in MY shoes. lol Do we have a smiley for patting myself on the back? Last edited by eaglssong; 10-09-2009 at 11:08 AM. |

| Hi Anne, Welcome to the exercise thread! Good for you on that walk!! I'll give ya a pat on the back, for sure!! ![]() I started running this summer...in July to be exact. (I just turned 55). We have wretched heat and humidity here as well...OOOklahoma!, so I go at the very "crack of dawn" in the summer. I can NOT tolerate evening walks or runs because the asphalt is sooooo hot after a day of 100 degrees....ugh. So, I found it's just best, for me anyway, to go early rather than late. On days you just can't get outdoors due to heat or air quality alerts, get yourself a few beginner dvds or videos like Leslie Sansone Walk away the pounds. It takes very little space for her work outs...basically walking in place and if you can't keep up or go the distance, you can always stop, or pause it for a few minutes, then go again. I use her 3 and 4 mile tapes for my exercise if my route is icey or snowed over. Another thing that's good for indoors, is get yourself some hand weights...in 2,5(,8,and 10...for later) lbs. and do some upper body work. I really need to start again on that myself!! I have a pretty good comfort range and I walked last winter even in 25 degrees...it's the howling North winds that would make me stay in sometimes. Anyhoo...please join us in the exercise accountability thread if you'd like. We just report in with our exercise accomplishments and try to cheer each other on! ![]() It's finally quit raining, so I'm off to run! C-ya! s

| Thanks Shelley, I have several of Leslie's tapes here somewhere. Guess it's time to dig them out. Might start using my oldies but goodies tapes too. Since there's nobody here to see me prancing around like a fool, I can get away with it, and luckily, the unit underneath mine is empty at the moment. You live in one of my favorite states. No, not for the scenery........ because of the people. When I left New Mexico (long, boring story), I got stranded in OK City, and the motel manager and her staff treated me like I was family. Everyone I met there helped me in any way possible, and made me feel not so worried about how I was going to get back east (my Jeep had died there). I have never forgotten their kindness. Now if only I had located a guy I dated way back when (like my teen years), I might have stayed. He was a submarine sailor and the cutest thing I ever did see. ![]() But I digress. I will check out the accountability thread. Just want to make sure I'm really going to keep up before I post there. When it comes to exercise, I'm as lazy as one can be, but I'm going to really try and get it done this time around. |
