Talking Take a walk in JULY

Well.......Shazam.....I can't believe June blew by like a rocket ship...LOL.
Here's an update on my heel:
Got my orthotics today, and I can tell you, they will take some getting used to. They feel like they are making me externally rotate my foot when I walk...aarrgghh! The right foot feels better than the left, but the left one is the gimmpy one :o LOL.
The insurance hasn't certed me for the procedure yet, so that is still on hold.
In the meantime, I continue to do stretching exercises for my foot and heel, ice massage, and now get to wear the lovely orthotic inserts in my shoes
It is NOT fun to have squeaky joints, bad feet, and an achy back...that is reason alone to lose weight and keep my body in motion for as long as I can

Unhappy Re: Take a walk in JULY

Well, even though I did not get to do a fitness walk today, I wore those wonderful little orthotics in my shoes for 9 grueling hours at work; was essentially on my feet the whole time! I don't think I am going to be very fond of my little orthotic friends...LOL...at least not at the moment.
MY FEET HURT!!!
OK....I feel better.....kinda.....sorta.....maybe a little bit...

Happy trails.....

Hang in there! I think that those things probably will take a while to get used to... (like my experience w/ knee braces...). I can definitely empathize w/ you on the squeaky (creaky-in my case) joints--knees especially. Enjoy your walking!

What is a reasonable amount of miles for a moderately active person to log in during a month? I aim for 10,000 steps a day, but probably average about 7,000...

sswlaw,
It really up to you...a YMMV thing...LOL...no pun intended. From several fitness walking articles I've read, 3 miles per day, 5 days a week, will give you 60 miles in a month. I think that is a good place to start, especially if you can log in another 4-5K steps in a day.

Shell,

How are your feeties??? You are supposed to ease into the orthotics... When I got mine (which I no longer wear -- I use Birks instead!) they had me do like an hour the first day, 2 the second and so on.

I began walking again today. I did not go very far, as I've been quite ill for over a month, but I did it. I was out for about 17 minutes. I'm aiming for about 1/2 hour eventually at a fast clip. All I was able to manage was a gentle stroll today...

Shelley - Sorry those orthotic thingies (that's a technical term) are giving you problems. Listen to Sharron and ease into them.

Sharron - Starting out gradually is always best when you've had a hiatus.

ssw - don't worry too much about achieving the 10,000 steps right away. 7000 is good for a while. Aim to increase it by 1000 next month and 1000 the month after.

I've been back to a higher level of walking so far in July. June was down by 30 miles over May. But so far in 6 days I have 21.25 miles in July. But I'm going to ahve to get myself out the door early. The temperature is already 77 degrees at 7:30 a.m. With highs in the 90's and fairly humid to boot, it's either early or not at all.

Walked 1.76 mi in 30 min today; not good for a couple of reasons. Mostly, about 15 minutes into my walk, my heel pain returned big time...aarrgghh! I have been limping ever since...blah! Second, the heat and humidity made me nauseous...ack!!!
I think I'm turning into a whinner.....groan!!!! LOL....
I just want to be NOT in pain when I walk...
happy trails to all....

(((hugs back 'atcha)))
No walk for me today; heel is really tender. I wish the insurance folks would make their decision <sigh>
Happy trails...

Gee Shell, sorry bout your heel. How well do you hop? Sorry I couldn't resist.LOL

My walking is going better than ever for July. In 11 days have walked 46.5 miles.
went to the mountains today and walked up 2 trails to different peaks. Quite steep trails too. Also did a short nature trail to make the total walk for today 6 miles. Fitday is giving me 1147 calories burned above bmr for this. Makes up for the pint of le Crab ice cream I gave myself as a reward.

OK -- I have a report!

Some time ago (before I got sick last month) my chiropractor suggested I try yoga stretches for my back. Well, I finally felt like I could try them and began on Monday. Mind you, I am starting out very slowly, only adding one pose a day, so I'm up to 3 poses (3rd on is a 2 parter.) I've noticed a dramatic increase in energy and stamina...

So much so that I was able to triple my walk this morning both in duration and speed!!! I actually could have jogged it if I'd been so inclined.

I feel terrific for the first time in simply ages

Well, I tripled my walk yesterday, and did it in the same time as I was doing the shorter walk. I did it even faster today -- will have to add another chunk tomorrow!!!

If you are interested in how I'm doing with the yoga, click here http://www.lowcarbeating.com/bb/show...559#post102559

THanks for the link Sharron! Congratulations, I'm glad it's helping. I used to do yoga about a hundred years ago. It was very powerful exercise.

I'm up to 67+ miles for July. I've found a new degree of stamina I haven't had in many years. Am going further and faster than I was even only a month ago.
